The Grass Widow is set primarily in Tenneesee during the American Civil War. The lead character, Bethel Erwin, joins the Condeferate army as a man named Tandy Scott. Bethel's soldierly adventures include the battle of Shilo and defecting to the Union army where she becomes an Assistant Surgeon.
