Welcome New Subscribers!

I’m glad you’ve all signed up for this crazy ride and have decided you want to give my stories a try.

If djinns, ghosts, succubi or other mythological beings that go bump in the night are your jam, then you've come to the right place! If supernatural stories about psychics, reincarnation, time travel and wiccans arouse your curiosity (among other things 😉) then you’ve come to the right place.

Did I also mention spicy, sensual, erotic romance? Well, those are in my catalogue too. Just know, though my stories can be dark, and I take my characters through various trials and tribulations, they all get an HEA at the end. Always. Unless it’s my horror stories. For those, enter at your own risk 😂

The stories you will find in my catalogue include all of the above paranormal elements and beings and more. The characters are everyday people just like you and me, trying to survive and find love in a crazy mixed-up world. Okay, most of them might have a few gifts here and there that the rest of us don't, but otherwise, they are just like you and me, just a little larger than life😃

I believe I have a little something that all romance readers can appreciate. So sit back, enjoy the trip and stay abreast of what’s coming next!

======================================================
Welcome back to this issue of The G-Spot!
Hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful Spring, had a Happy Easter and Mother’s Day and are all looking forward to a healthy and happy Memorial Day with your family and friends!
My younger sister’s having a baby! We were all initially shocked at the news a few months ago (evidently my sister was too when she found out she was already five months pregnant). As many baby showers that she’s organized and thrown over the years for co-workers and friends, she finally got to have one of her own yesterday . “Peanut” (as he/she has been temporarily christened) is due sometime in June and we’re all waiting with bated breath for the momentous event.

In the Movies: Took the nephews and niece to see TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (or for the initiated, TMNT). I really didn’t want to see this movie that much (unlike some other cartoons and “kiddy” movies I’ve taken them to over the years), and I got my wish since I spent more than 45 minutes on the concession stand line getting the kids refreshments. Initially, I went into the theater with them to find seats, then about 15-20 minutes into the show I went out, thinking the lines would have shortened up. Wrooooong. By the time I got back to my seat, the kids had thought I’d left. And get this, five minutes after sitting back down to enjoy what was left of the show, the lights came up and some advertisements appeared on the screen. I just cracked up laughing while other annoyed and confused theater goers stared at me and started to laugh too. After a few minutes the movie came back on and continued from where it had stopped, so I got to see the final conflict and battle scenes, but I mean sheesh. It was an impromptu trip, granted. Normally, I take the kids to the matinee/first show and try to be as much in front of the line as possible, if not first when the theater opens. But they didn’t make it to my mother’s house until the afternoon, so we had to settle for the 4:20 show. Not my usual scene at all. I hadn’t been in a theater packed with so many little kids and their parents in a long while, so it was a bit of a culture shock. For what it's worth, for the 20 minutes of the movie I did see--the beginning and end--it seemed like a pretty cute movie.

Caught PRIDE the next weekend and managed to get popcorn and still see the entire movie . Since it was a pretty good one, I’m glad I didn’t miss any of it. This one tells the story of Jim Ellis (Terence Howard) who coached a rag-tag group of African-American urban youth from Philly all the way to a state swimming championship. The movie is nothing that we haven’t all seen before in biopic sports movies, but it is was well-done with solid performances. A definite feel-good movie, and an inspiration and triumph for the human spirit to see young black youth excel in a sport that they haven’t really competed, and especially excelled in, before. Rah-Rah! Followed this one up with a viewing of BLADES OF GLORY, another sports movie, but this one more laugh-out- loud hilarious than tear-jerking inspirational. Will Ferrell and John Heder give funny, standout performances and make, first a great rivalry between child prodigy (Heder) and sex addict/rock star of the ice (Ferrell), then great teammates in this sports comedy. The training and competition segments are hilarious. Heder and Ferrell have great chemistry and make a perfect comedy team. I wouldn't be surprised to see them teaming up again in another movie. This one was as enjoyable as PRIDE, just for much different reasons.

And of course, my viewing pleasure wouldn’t have been complete this May without having seen…SPIDER-MAN 3! LOVED it! Had intended to see it regardless of any reviews, good, bad or fantastic (as I do with most movies I've already made up my mind to see). Have to admit to a little nervousness when watching the news and several people leaving the theater commented that they didn't like it, it wasn't that good/as good as the previous ones ("too much romance"). Okay, the last part sold me and made me want to see it more, not less. I did wonder what the moviegoers meant by "too much romance", especially when all the Spidey movies have romance at their core (along with healing and redemption themes, two of my favorite themes). I love the way Spider-Man grows throughout the series, which to me is more important than all the special effects and action (though these elements are great too). I love the STORIES and the characters. Harry’s evolution made for a particularly action-packed and poignant ending as does Sandman’s turn.

Cable/DVDs: Made it a groovy, mutant weekend and watched X-MEN: THE LAST STAND on cable later in the evening same day after catching SPIDER-MAN 3 . And I ask you, what can be more dramatic/romantic and poignant than the climactic scene with Jean Gray and Wolverine?

Caught SLITHER on cable. This one is a cross between DAWN OF THE DEAD and THE PUPPET MASTERS and involves a small-town cop (SERENITY’S Nathan Fillion) faced with an alien invasion in the form of worms/slugs from outer space. I actually thought this one was pretty good. Had good action, a little gory in spots, and definitely had its campy moments, but overall decent entertainment for its genre.

Watched THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED on cable (IFC—Independent Film Channel—probably one of the only channels with enough cojones to show it). This is an expose and insider's look at the methods the MPAA uses to rate films. Interviews with industry professionals and clips of past and current movies (with commentary on why they got the ratings they did) highlight this documentary. Overall, an interesting, insightful and well-done movie and excellent observations on the state of censorship in the movies, specifically, and in America in general.

On DVD watched SHADOWBOXER. In this movie, a ruthless gangster (Stephen Dorff) who suspects his pregnant wife of cheating on him takes out a contract on her life. The pair hired to do the job—a middle-aged woman dying of cancer and her younger male partner—are the most mixed-matched pair of assassins I’ve seen since Travolta and Jackson in PULP FICTION. Helen Mirren and Cuba Gooding, Jr. star as the larger-than-life assassins, Rose and Mikey, and do a stellar job portraying the human side and compassion of the hired killers. Cuba Gooding is especially outstanding in his role as a young man with a troubled and brutal past, at once cold-hearted and vulnerable as Mikey. The supporting cast is also very good and convincing (as usual, Stephen Dorff is an excellent villain, but I fear him running the risk of getting type-cast if he continues to take these sort of roles). From the first frame SHADOWBOXER grabs the viewer by the throat and doesn’t let go until the last line is uttered. This is an excellent movie, something different, new and way off the beaten path. There were several unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat and took me by surprise and the ending was a perfect topping to this violent and daring crime drama. This one I highly recommend.

Now for some writing and publication news:

Finished ZACK AND THE DARK SHAFT in late April and e-mailed to publisher for consideration. I loved the way the story and characters turned out in this one. By the end of it the heroine had gone through a transformation I hadn’t expected and was in for some serious redeeming. I think I turned her around sufficiently and believably enough. As of this writing, I’ve recently received some exciting and interesting news concerning ZACK AND THE DARK SHAFT. Can’t go into too many details as of yet, but I can say that an M/M series surrounding the club in the book (Zara’s) and previous characters is in development. I’m so thrilled about this project and will keep you all posted as to the progress and details as soon as I can!

MANFIEST DESTINY was released April 1st and finished out the month as the #2 Top Seller at Siren. See the great reviews I’ve received for it so far in the newsletter.

NINE INCHES OF SNOW AND THE EBONY PRINCESS broke into All Romance eBooks Top Ten Bestsellers this week at #10 and as of this writing has already climbed to #9: http://allromanceebooks.com/

Also learned this week that BETWEEN DARKNESS AND DAYLIGHT is a Highest Rated eBook at Fictionwise: http://fictionwise.com/topstories.htm

The release date for Rapture 1 (Siren’s Signature Anthology which includes my Sisters of Emsharra novella, SENTINEL’S HUNGER) has been pushed back slightly. Look for it in print, July 1, 2007.

CARAMEL FLAVA 2: I’ve been in limbo since I got the original acceptance and sent off the contract. Haven’t received it back yet, nor have I gotten the manuscript back to edit so to tell you the truth, I’m not sure where the anthology (or my story) stand. I will keep you posted as I am.

Sent IDLE HANDS to Cleis Press for consideration in their Best Women’s Erotica 2008 anthology; BREAKING AND ENTERING (yes, that one) for consideration in their Best Gay Romance 2008; and recently-completed short (bdsm/Femme Domme) GRAY BADGE OF TRUST to the Yes, Ma’am anthology. Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best for all three…
That’s all for now.

As always, hope you enjoy this issue of The G-Spot!

MINI-REVIEWS (WHAT I'M READING/WHAT I BOUGHT/RECOMMENDED READS):

CAMOUFLAGE by Joe Haldeman: This one was recommended to me by MySpace contact Oz Pearlman after he read my profile and saw we had similar tastes in reading (especially Octavia E. Butler) and contacted me for some suggestions. I recommended CIRCUIT OF HEAVEN by Dennis Danvers to him and he recommended, among other titles and authors, this Haldeman title. Said it was a quick read (and it was). Though there were some sections where I caught my eyes crossing and my brain started to hurt (specifically when the scientific types were trying to crack the code and mystery behind the artifact they discovered at the bottom of the ocean) the fast-paced narrative, suspense, and character development leading up to the big reveal and showdown at the end, more than made up for the science fiction and math in the story . I really enjoyed following the changeling’s story the most, its emotional growth and metamorphosis over the decades very gripping, as was the suspense leading up to the showdown between it and the chameleon. Very gratifying and romantic ending, though I wondered how Haldeman was going to wrap everything up in only a few pages. I’ve now added Joe Haldeman to my list of favorite authors (I know, after only one read) and am eager to search his current and backlist for some similar reads. I highly recommend CAMOUFLAGE for Octavia E. Butler fans, specifically those of her Patternmaster series (especially WILD SEED) or anyone with a taste for creative and well-written sci-fi. I ordered my copy from Amazon, though I’m assuming CAMOUFLAGE is available in other major online bookstores and in brick-and-mortar stores in the science fiction section…bon appetite!

SEVERED LIMBS DON’T GROW BACK by Monica Louise Bryant: Not usually my sort of fare (not since I got out of high school and became an “adult” that is) but this is another MySpace author title that I was lured into buying after visiting the profile of someone who invited me to be her friend. I was intrigued by the title, then after reading her short story segments of GRACIE on her blog and enjoying her voice and storytelling I decided to give this young adult novel a try. I’m glad I did. It was a refreshing change of pace and came out of nowhere to knock me for a loop. It’s nothing I haven’t read before as far as teenage angst and problem novels go, but it’s the author’s voice, storytelling ability and her lead character Kate, that sells this story for me and puts it over the top. Bryant has a wonderful sense of humor and the dramatic, and an uncanny ability to shock and surprise the reader without making her feel duped. I loved the way she packed such an emotional wallop in a small amount of space and had me breathless the closer I got to the end wondering how she was going to tie everything up. Bryant didn’t disappoint me. This was a realistic, fast-paced, one-sitting read that you absolutely won’t be able to put down until the last page is turned on the bittersweet ending. If you have a tweener or young adult in your life or just want a change-of-pace-read for yourself, this book is for you. SEVERED LIMBS DON’T GROW BACK is an Author House title (http://www.authorhouse.com) available from Amazon.com

Currently Reading: PARALLEL ATTRACTION by Deidre Knight, e-book UNIFIED SOULS by Candice Gilmer and THE REAL DEAL by Lucy Monroe.
Bought: (e-books) VISION OF LIGHT by Amanda Hilton; MADE FOR EACH OTHER by Morgan Ashbury; BODY, HEART AND SOUL by Samantha Lucas; UNDER TANNER’S THUMB by Sage Burnette; and BEAU AND THE LADY BEAST by Morgan Ashbury. Oh, and speaking of Octavia Butler (not now, but earlier ), I picked up BLOOD CHILD from a dealer on Amazon. It’s a collection of short stories that I had never read before and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one. I’ll let you all know what I think of it and my other reads, hopefully by the next newsletter. As my TBB list continues to grow…and grow…

REVIEW EXCERPTS:

BETWEEN DARKNESS AND DAYLIGHT:

"...This book enthralled me. Gracie McKeever has taken romance to a whole new level. Reading of Nova’s search and the depths of how she felt pulls you into her characters and you cannot put the book down! Erotic love scenes make you drool for Zane as if he was a real man. I wish he was a real man! This was a beautiful love story and I give it a whole hearted five roses. Everyone read this book! I am gleefully rubbing my hands because I had a tasty treat at the end of Beneath the Surface!" 5 Roses, Kelly, My Book Cravings. "...I loved this book. Between Darkness and Daylight is the best read this year. The pace was fast, the story line reaches out and grabs you and doesn’t let go until the last page. I couldn’t read this book fast enough. Zane and Nova have trouble with getting it right and leveling with each other. I found the emotions of all of the characters very intense, including the villain; you can almost sympathize with him in a twisted way. Gracie C. McKeever did a wonderful job on developing all of the characters. Her villain was so evil that you knew he would do anything to get what he wanted, kill or hurt anyone. I love paranormal aspects in a character, but Nova was probably the best character I have read in one of these. I just cannot say enough about how great this book was. I will be looking for Gracie C. McKeever’s other books; she is a writer to watch for." 5 Angels, Chris H., Fallen Angel Reviews. To read the full review, visit here:

"...Ms. McKeever has penned another masterpiece in this tale! Featuring the reoccurring themes of reincarnation and mind reading, this tale is not for the faint at heart. It is perhaps the most suspenseful tale this reviewer has read by Ms. McKeever, and although the villain is revealed rather early on, there are many shocking twists and turns that will keep a reader engrossed far past their bedtime. One wonders if the author has had experience raising orphan teenage boys because the character of Ransom was so very well-written and true to life. Nova and Zane’s on and off again relationship was the mainstay of this book and their love for each other shone through even the most troublesome of times. As usual, superb author writes sex scenes that are incendiary and will have the reader reaching for a fan or a cool glass of water after reading them. All in all, another excellent job by Ms. McKeever!" 4.5 Hearts, Leah, Love Romances and More. "...Zane is an admirable character and his feelings for his students reach out and touch you. Nova is the sassy heroine who is intent on saving his life. Together this couple is dynamite and the love scenes are absolutely explosive. Readers will love the constant interaction between Zane and Nova. Zane’s [nephew] also makes a great secondary character and hints that maybe he needs his very own story. Gracie McKeever is an excellent author and her creative characters and interesting plots make her books must haves." 4 Blue Ribbons, Angel, Romance Junkies Readers. IN PLAIN SIGHT:

"...In Plain Sight is a gripping, sexually steamy, edge-of-your-seat, cut-throat suspense that tackles emotionally charged issues such as interracial dating, racism, domestic abuse, single parenthood, heartbreak, and letting go of the past to truly love yourself in the now. McKeever delivers a story woven with such intricate scenes soaked with adventure and suspense that a reader will find it difficult to close this book until the end. Characters are so vivid, so realistic that I found my heart skipping a beat as if I were racing through Dara's dangerous escapades and loving Caution Foster as if he were my man. From brutal murder to sizzling erotic scenes that simply melt your most sensual parts, In Plain Sight is definitely an erotic paranormal suspense you can not afford to miss." 5 Sistah Hugs, Tasha Martin, SistahFriend Book Club. MANIFEST DESTINY:

"...This story is the third tale to feature a Vega sibling and their big sister Angela. It also ties into another McKeever tale, Spells Cast in Shadow, which is Seth and Montana’s story. Although connected, this is a stand-alone tale and may be fully enjoyed without reading either of the other stories, but is best enjoyed with full knowledge of the back-story, if for no other reason than Ms. McKeever is such a magnificent storyteller. In many ways, Jason and Evelyn seem like each other in the opposite form-both are extremely wary of entering into any type of relationship due to painful past experiences, and both are stubborn, strong-willed individuals who insist on living life on their own terms. In many ways, they seem like a totally improbable pair! However, Ms. McKeever does a masterful job in revealing the traits of these characters in a way that plausibly allows them to become a fully recognized couple. This tale is full of twists and turns, and the reader will never know just what the irrepressible Evelyn will come up with next. The love scenes are scorching and classic McKeever! This reviewer also enjoyed revisiting the main characters from previous tales and other repeat readers will do so as well. The paranormal bits are primarily psychic in nature, although a couple of mystical creatures do make an appearance. The two main protagonists provide all of the angst so readers looking for the suspense element found many times in Ms. McKeever’s tales will miss that in this one. Excellent effort as usual, Ms. McKeever! Highly recommended!" 4.5 Hearts, Leah, Love Romances and More. "...First off, I LOVE how Gracie C. McKeever joined her Matchmaker series to her novel Spells Cast In Shadows in this story! It makes perfect sense for Evelyn to vacation at the very same Dude Ranch owned by Seth and Montana Phoenix – not to mention it was great fun to see where that couple is now. Pairing Evelyn with Jason, who suffered from a case of unrequited love in that previous book was wonderful, and paves the way for future crossovers, should McKeever choose to do so.

I loved Jason Makepeace before, but seeing him come into his own in The Matchmaker, Book 3: Manifest Destiny was a pure delight. It took someone with a gentle soul and a firm hand to break through Evelyn Vega’s considerable defenses, and who better for the job than a man who stands by his friends even while his own heart is bruised? By the time Jason meets Evelyn, he is over his crush on Montana, and planning for his move away from the Freeborn Ranch. The timing couldn’t be better for him to meet the woman who is his ‘Manifest Destiny’, even if he does not believe so at first.

Evelyn thinks she is over the pain of her first marriage, but she has buried the real hurt deep down inside, hidden even from herself. She needs someone like Jason who can touch her very soul, read her every need as easily as he finds he can read her mind, to help her deal with the past that has sealed her heart away from the potential pain of loving again.

I am uncertain how many more Vega siblings are left, but with the expansion of this series in Manifest Destiny, I am hopeful that Angela will turn her skills to others when she finishes marrying off her brothers and sisters. I’ve enjoyed each of these stories as much as the first, and am nowhere near ready to see an end to McKeever’s The Matchmaker series!" 4.5 Klovers, Jennifer, Kwips and Kritiques. "...Manifest Destiny is the third volume in Ms. McKeever’s Matchmaker series, but it works well as a stand-alone title. The fish-out-of-water tale of a city girl in a rural setting is a classic plot, and Ms. McKeever adds a paranormal twist to keep it fresh. The sex scenes are numerous and they leave nothing to the imagination, but they are integrated into the story and do not seem gratuitous. Evelyn is a sensual woman who proves that the saying “life begins at forty” can be very true. Jason allows her to live out her fantasies of being with a cowboy and proves that there are younger men who appreciate the intelligence and experience of an older woman." 4 Coffee Cups, Maya, Coffee Time Romance. "...I recommend reading these books in sequential order. If you don’t, I believe you miss out on the development of some of the characters. There was enough information in Manifest Destiny to prick your interest in Beneath the Surface, Matchmaker 1 and Terms of Surrender, Matchmaker 2. Gracie C. McKeever has developed the May – December romance well, at least from this forty-something’s perspective. In Manifest Destiny the comments are sharp and well aimed. I fell in love with Jason; I wonder if I went to Colorado I could find one like him?" 4 Angels, Dana P. for Fallen Angel Reviews. NINE INCHES OF SNOW AND THE EBONY PRINCESS:

"...With different slang and fewer modern day references, a reader might imagine that they were reading any one of Grimm’s Fairy Tales with a decidedly sexy bent. Ms. McKeever has drawn elements from several traditional fairy tales and given them her own trademark twist. Who would have ever though that the big bad wolf would turn out to be a hero? Or that Sleeping Beauty would be male? Because it is presented as a fantasy tale, this reviewer was immediately able to suspend any sense of reality and enjoy this bon-bon of a tale simply for what it was-another fantastic story by the great Ms. McKeever. Aziza and David are an extremely likeable pair and the reader will find themselves rooting for them as one does a favorite sports team. Their sexual chemistry is absolutely combustible, and David’s grandfather is a hoot! The only complaint this reviewer had about this tale is that it was too short, though the story was definitely complete! Recommended to all fairy tale lovers!" 4 Hearts, Leah, Love Romances and More. "...Sassy and sizzling from the get-go, NINE INCHES OF SNOW AND THE EBONY PRINCESS is an entertaining tale, although I have to say that the meaning behind the title still escapes me. Aziza and David are both engaging characters who practically jump from the pages. However, it's David's ornery grandfather who just about steals the show. Toss in a bit of a mystery to add to the romance and you have a short and sweet pick-me-up to begin or end the day with." Phillipa Ann for Romance Reviews Today (RRTErotica). PREDATOR’S SALVATION:

"...This was an interesting read that I believe stands alone even if you did not read the first in the series. Ms McKeever gives you enough background on the characters that you are not lost as you read the story. PREDATOR’S SALVATION definitely has enough scorching sex in it to start a fire! Well rounded, believable, and likeable are Mateo and LaMia and the rest of the cast of characters involved in this great fantasy story. SPELLS CAST IN SHADOWS:

"...Spells Cast in Shadows was an excellent read. It grabbed my attention from the start and didn’t let up till the end. The characters interact with each other flawlessly. This is another winner for Ms. McKeever.” 4 Stars, Christy for May Review. Visit here to read the full review: http://mayreview.com/custom2_1.html

STORY EXCERPT

Chapter 1

Ten…Run!
Nine…Run Faster!!
Eight…You better move your butt!!!
Seven…Where the hell is the minimum safe distance barrier?
Six…Thank God, there’s the perimeter. Jump for it.
Five…Who’s that in the way?
Four…Who cares! Tackle him.
Three…Damn! Hard, lean, muscular body under me.
Two…Whoa! Hard, lean, muscular body over me.
One…
Boom!
Sabrina Morgan’s entire body shook as glass and flying debris flew into the air from the detonation. The bomb she’d been working on had gone off. The ensuing explosion ripped through the quiet summer morning. She was the bomb technician. She was supposed to have stopped the bomb, but it had blown despite her best effort. How could that have happened?
With no answer forthcoming from the assembled emergency teams cowering down around her, Sabrina panicked.
The bomb nightmares she’d had for most of her life flew through her mind. Then she lost complete control of herself…which never happened, either. Not ever.
“Oh, no! No!” Sabrina sobbed hysterically into the crisp, clean collar of the fireman who covered her body protectively with his own.
The thought of someone having to protect her from the bomb she’d failed to stop made her cry harder. She heard herself babble nonsensically as she turned her face into the fireman’s rough, whiskered cheek. He smelled safe and good. She needed to check out for a few minutes to get herself together.
Sighing, Sabrina burrowed her cheek further into his throat scented with a musky cologne. Her lips connected with his skin as she inhaled his delectable scent. Her senses reeled as she clung to him. In her trance-like, panicked state, he was her only lifeline. She tasted the salt of her own tears.
“Shh, don’t cry. It’ll be okay, I promise,” the man holding her said, his voice honey-smooth. His breath tickled the loose hair next to her ear when he spoke. Booming noises continued to burst from the building. The comforting words from him intruded into her consciousness. She opened her eyes and was surprised to find her mouth still pressed to his neck, her lips rubbing sensuously along the male skin. Her fisted hands clutched both sides of his open jacket, securing him in place. She wanted him to say something else in that seductive voice.
She’d had a moment to appreciate the warm, male body covering hers, and then her panic set in again. Sabrina stopped kissing him. She loosened her fingers from the death grip she had on his protective yellow and black jacket.
The bomb had gone off—the bomb she’d tried to defuse, the very reason for her existence. She’d been a bomb technician for nearly five years. Until today, she’d never failed to diffuse a bomb.
Never.
Her worst nightmare had exploded with a burning vengeance all around her. She huddled under the firefighter, her body shaking, and with his whispered words of comfort, she bawled like a five-year-old after a bad dream.
She’d never lost control of her cool demeanor before today’s debacle. The iron-hard bitch façade she’d built over these last several years for protection had slipped off as if the bomb itself had blown it from her.
At long last, the explosions subsided, replaced by the acrid stench of burnt plastic. Sabrina felt the man above her shift to lift his body off her.
Time to get it together. Too bad the girly, lonely, emotional side of her brain would not cooperate. She’d put that part of herself on the back burner for far too long. Now that it had been released, it wasn’t giving up without a fight.
The fireman lifted off her slightly. She put a hand over her face and wiped away her tears without being seen. She hoped.
“Are you going to be all right?” he asked quietly. She slipped her fingers down far enough to see him. The sexy voice was attached to the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen. Sabrina shook her head no and sniffed a couple times.
No, I’m not okay. A bomb just went off, and it’s my fault.
“No?” he asked, starting to smile. Perhaps he’d expected a different answer. People usually answered with a polite “Fine” even though they never meant it.
She felt tears scalding her lower eyelids and running down her face again. Sabrina sniffed and uttered a very unladylike hiccup. She couldn’t catch her breath. She couldn’t wipe the tears away fast enough. Panic attack alert.
“Don’t let anyone…hic…see me like this…hic. Please!” She noticed a few flashes of yellow with black stripes from the other firefighters beginning to stir around them. She desperately swiped at her eyes now, trying to force her tears to end, but nothing could stop them quickly enough. She willed the emotional side of her mind to get a grip, suck it up, and go hide on the back burner again.
“Don’t worry. You have a minute or two. I won’t leave you yet…I promise.” He tipped his large brimmed fireman’s hat down to shield her face as she wiped her eyes again.
“Thank…you,” she stuttered between hiccups.
“No problem.” He studied her face, his concern for her still evident in his gorgeous, emerald green eyes. She looked away first, closed her eyes, and took several deep, soothing breaths. Calm down. There was no need to let anyone on the bomb squad see her crying.
Instead of thinking about the horror of the bomb, Sabrina focused on the feel of the fireman’s body against hers. His rock-hard thighs still pressed solidly into hers. She quivered in response to the intimate connection. Eyes still closed, she moved her face again closer to his and took another deep calming breath. With it came the fireman’s spicy delectable scent. She inhaled again and forcibly restrained her hips from lifting upwards to encourage a deeper contact. She also resisted the sudden, visceral urge to place her lips on his whiskered cheek and take a lick—to taste him. The sultry shape of his mouth beckoned her with the promise of tactile pleasure.
It had been so long, she had forgotten how incredible it felt to have a man pressed this close, this intimate. The pain she associated with her past relationships had also forced her to abandon her physical needs. She ignored the longing her body endured in the silence of her chaotic and lonely life. Up to now, no one had tempted her. Right now though, she was very tempted. She wanted to melt into the fireman and immerse her body into his warmth. What would be the worst thing that could happen?
She could think of worse things than having a gorgeous fireman connected to her intimately…or almost intimately. The long-neglected part of her body below her waist was another item on a substantial list of ignored things in her lonely life. She wondered if the fireman currently scorching her lower half was enjoying it as much as she was. What would he do if she lifted up and ground her hips into him? The vision of this fireman naked, sweaty, and impaling her repeatedly with his no-doubt impressive cock skated across her consciousness. Whoa! Sabrina’s mind literally skidded to a stop.
“Hey, Earth to bomb technician,” his voice intruded. Her eyes popped open in surprise as her hips twitched in regret. She searched his fiery green gaze and wondered if he could read her mind. Would that really be a bad thing?
“Huh?”
“We’re going to have to get up, or people will start talking about us. You ready to show your face, yet?” he asked.
She stared at him and fought her libido as her sex-starved body reached upward as if protesting the imminent separation from the vibrant, male body. He squinted his eyes slightly as if in question. Had he read her thoughts? What was wrong with her? She never entertained salacious daydreams about the men she encountered.
Sabrina sighed, and her breath caught twice, whether from her vivid sexual thoughts or her emotional outburst, she didn’t exactly know. She blinked and looked away, breaking their trance-like eye-lock.
“I guess so,” but she wasn’t exactly convinced she was ready to face her lonely world.
He smiled at her as if for encouragement. Then he lifted to his hands and knees, finally breaking their body contact.
Pity, oh, such a huge pity!
“Hey, Jake, are you finished saving her yet, or do you need to do some more mouth to mouth?” Another firefighter next to them laughed.
“Don’t mind him. He’s just jealous.” Jake looked down at her and winked.
Oh, good Lord! He was gorgeous.
He held out a gloved hand and she took hold. Sabrina shook off her surely inappropriate, lust filled reverie, knowing a future with him wouldn’t go anywhere. She didn’t date firemen. She didn’t date anyone.
Sabrina stood with Jake’s help, readying herself to face the music. She turned and immediately caught sight of a blazing, angry pair of blue eyes drilled in her direction. They belonged to William Murphy, her bomb technician partner. He glared at her from where he stood near the bomb squad’s primary disposal truck. Once her eyes connected with Murphy’s glare, he strode in her direction, anger punctuating his every step.
She’d been in communication with Murphy through several line of sight spotters when she was inside the building. He warned her to get out when the timer read ninety seconds, but she’d convinced herself she could defuse the bomb. She wanted to at least try because she had never failed before. So, she pushed the edge of the envelope this time. The same as she always did.
She’d signaled the guy in her direct line of sight to get out when the timer hit sixty seconds. She knew Murphy would be screaming for her to get out at the same time, but she waited until the last possible second.
The lowest timer reading she ever got to was five minutes, fourteen seconds. She thought a lot about her record as the bomb had ticked off down to a minute even. She didn’t lose faith in her abilities until the timer hit twenty…nineteen…
She ran and counted down from eighteen seconds.
She’d blown through the building’s front door as her internal count down hit ten. She’d run flat out as fast as she could by the time she hit the barrier perimeter…and the muscular fireman.
It was too bad she hadn’t worn her obligatory Bomb Technician t-shirt, which stated: I am a bomb technician. If you see me running, try to keep up. Not that she would have taken the time to look and see if anyone was trying to keep up. It was just the first time it ever would have applied.

Excerpt (unedited Work-in-Progress) by Monica Louise Bryant:

"I need a new plan." She thought; walking deep into the obscure darkness of the hotel's alley.
Suddenly an uneasy feeling rose inside her. A chill permeated through her body like a shot. She sensed that she was being watched. With squinted eyes and clenched fists she slowly rotated checking every angle.
Adjacent to a stack of empty boxes was a dark figure slumped in a heap. From her black sack she unearthed a flashlight. The lucid gleam revealed the body of a young woman. There was a rope bound securely around her neck. Blood from her still warm body streamed into a vast puddle beneath her.
Maya stumbled back into the darkness. Seeing such work not of her own was peculiar. This motherly woman, beat and strangled in an alley next to an upscale hotel didn‘t seem kosher. It was too messy a job to be done by anyone Maya knew.
Next to the deceased lay a small hand bag dabbed with blood drops. Maya examined a beige wallet inside the bag. She sifted through numerous credit cards and repetitive photos of an unsightly little girl. Beneath the mass of club cards and phone numbers was an I.D. card. On it was a picture of the deceased and the name April Ashford. Maya dropped everything and stumbled again into the darkness.
"Who could have done this?" Maya reasoned. "I need to call Alec."
Aimlessly digging for her cell phone in her bag, Maya panicked with uncertainty. She quickly dialed the numbers and held the phone erect to her ear. By the third ring, Alec uttered a few hellos and who's there but Maya didn't speak. She hung-up and thought a minute. She then dialed again.
"Hello, who is this?"
"It's me, Maya said, her voice shaky, It's done."
"April ? You finished her?"
"Yes, Maya lied while stooping downward to begin taking April's head."
"And you will have her head when you come?"
"Yes of course I will."
"Good."
Hanging up once more, Maya completed her task with a few swift slits of her blade. The sound of flesh ripping seemed to echo throughout the dark alley, yet Maya didn't even flinch. She ended by storing the head in a large black trash bag.
Maya solemnly walked to the end of the alley. She took a deep breath and looked at the hotel. She longed to know who April's murderer was. She grasped the reality of the situation and hailed a taxi to headquarters.

We’re sure that the patrons in the tables around us were wondering what sort of loonies we are!...” This publisher is a relatively new kid on the block (I don’t think it’s quite a year old) but with a promising selection of books and genres on their site and likewise, established and up-and-coming authors. I haven’t purchased anything from them yet, but I’ve got my eye on them for the future. Check them out at: http://www.stardustpress.com

THIS ISSUE'S AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: Comes to us from MySpace, Ms. Monica Louise Bryant! As I mentioned before I “discovered” Monica and her writing when she invited me to be a friend on MySpace. I was immediately enthralled by her writing voice and storytelling and the rest is history. But I’ll let Monica finish telling you a little about herself: Monica Louise Bryant, 23, began writing at the age of seven. It was at that time her second grade teacher, Mrs. Maddox, recognized her talent and encouraged her to keep writing. In 2005, Monica self-published SEVERED LIMBS DON’T GROW BACK and dedicated it to her teacher. Her styles of writing are as eclectic as her taste in music. There’s something for everyone. She writes poetry, short stories, young adult, and everything from comedy to serious drama. Monica was born and raised in Banning, California where she lives with her parents and keeps them both amused with her crazy tales.
