====================================================== Welcome back to this issue of The G - Spot!
Hope you’re all enjoying a wonderful fall so far and looking forward to a great Thanksgiving with your family and friends. Have a safe one!
HIGHLIGHTS – CABLE, DVD’s, THEATRICAL RELEASES:
2012: The story begins in 2009 when American and Indian scientists discover that the temperature of the Earth is rapidly increasing. American scientist Helmsley (Ejiofor) submits his report to his supervisor who then fast tracks it to the President. From here it’s a race against time as the world’s several superpowers plan in secret to build special arcs that will rescue select individuals once the end is near. Jump ahead to 2012 when author and divorced father Jackson Curtis (Cusack) tries to reconnect with his two children on a trip to Yellowstone where they discover some creepy goings on concerning the land and the government. The performances are capable (Woody Harrelson was a particular stand - out for me), but the special effects are the star here in this action adventure battle to save the human race against Mother Nature’s wrath. Perfect popcorn movie. 4 out of 5 Stars.
AUSTRALIA: Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) is an aristocrat from Great Britain who follows her husband Maitland to the sprawling ranch Faraway Downs that he has been trying to bring back up to speed out in Northern Australia. She arrives only to discover that he has been murdered, supposedly by an aboriginal witch doctor. However, definite machinations are afoot with the stock - man Fletcher who has been running the ranch for Sarah’s husband. Rough and rugged drover (Jackman) meets Sarah in town to take her to Faraway Downs where they discover her husband dead. Rather than sell the ranch to Darwin’s reigning cattle baron who is trying to tie up the beef market, Lady Sarah decides to stay on and drive more than 1500 head of cattle to town for market with Drover’s help. Of course along the way, they meet opposition from the barons. This turned out very differently than what I expected, but was very enjoyable nonetheless. Wonderful adventure steeped in mysticism with a torrid romance threaded through the storyline. The cinematography is breathtaking as is Hugh Jackman who is also just plain sexy. 5 out of 5 Stars.
DRAG ME TO HELL: A sweet and meek loan officer with lofty ambitions of moving up at the bank where she works is forced to evict an old woman from her home and soon finds herself the victim of a supernatural curse. This movie was slow and dragged in some spots (no pun intended) but overall, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. 3 out of 5 Stars.
FINAL DESTINATION IN 3D, THE: Once again a hapless teen foresees a deadly accident that kills lots of people in horrific and spectacular ways and because of his premonition is able to save his friends and some strangers in the bargain. But death doesn’t give up that easily and one by one, the people who were saved from the initial race - car crash begin to die in horrific and spectacular ways. Can you say Spike TV’s A Thousand Ways to Die marathon? 3 out of 5 Stars for the sheer inventiveness of some of the deaths.
LAW ABIDING CITIZEN: A frustrated and grief - stricken man takes matters into his own hands when a plea - bargain sets one of the killers of his family free. I thought the premise of this was intriguing, especially the twist of how Butler’s character commits his crimes against the justice system and its purveyors from prison. This was one where I was definitely rooting for the “bad” guy. The critics panned this with lots of 1 - and 2 - star ratings, but I thought this movie, the performances and especially the ending were great! 4 out of 5 Stars.
PANDORUM: Two astronauts awaken from hyper - sleep on a seemingly abandoned spacecraft with no memory of how they got there or even who they are. As one talks the other through the vessel to discover what’s going on, they soon realize that they are not alone. This one was kind of hard to follow, especially because of the dark and dreary shooting. The writers and directors pay homage here to the ALIEN franchise and it’s obvious how much affection they hold for that style of movie. Nice upbeat ending that made figuring out what was going on worthwhile. 3 out of 5 Stars.
PRECIOUS: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire: Precious is an overweight illiterate teen pregnant for the second time with her father’s child. Emotionally and physically abused by her mother and society at large, Precious is encouraged by her school’s principal to go to an alternative school where she can turn her life around. The tagline for this movie goes like this: “Life is hard. Life is short. Life is painful. Life is rich. Life is....Precious” and sums up the movie in a tidy nutshell. But as young Precious learns, life is anything but tidy. I didn’t read the book and after seeing the movie, I know why. Not to say the movie is bad, just the opposite—it was EXCELLENT and made me cry, as expected. I never wanted to read the book because the storyline sounded so depressing. But watching Monique in her glory, skillfully and without restraint bring the mother to life alone, made seeing this movie a must. I can't say enough good things about this movie and the trip out of the neighborhood to one of the very few theaters where the movie was showing in limited release (after going to one theater where it was already sold out until that evening) was worth the time and effort. I’m definitely smelling an Oscar in Monique’s future. 5 out of 5 Stars.
STEPFATHER, THE: A young man, Michael, returns home from military school to find his mother happily ensconced in her life with the perfect man and Michael’s future stepfather. Typical serial killer film, this was a decent remake with the expected open ending that leaves us to look forward to another slice - and - dice sequel. Dylan Walsh does a decent bad guy. 3 out of 5 Stars.
SURROGATES: Set in the future, this movie follows humans as they live their lives behind the scenes and from their homes while their surrogate robots interact in the outside world for them. Willis plays a cop who is forced to leave his home for the first time in years to investigate the murder of others’ surrogates. This scifi reminded me of I, ROBOT with pretty much the same lessons on humanity and what makes a human human. Good solid action, typical, solid Bruce Willis performance, good story. 3 out of 5 Stars.
THE BOX: A small box is mysteriously left on the steps of a married couple’s home. The couple later learns from the box’s creator that pushing the button will gain them a million tax - free dollars, but someone in the world they don’t know will die. This story did great as a Twilight Zone episode, one of my favorites, but stretched to a full - length feature film, doesn’t fare as well. The story line was all over the place and unfocused to me and the writer and director didn’t seem like they knew what kind of movie they wanted to make—paranormal, scifi, mystery, suspense or all of the above. Though I’m a fan of all these genres and like mixing and matching myself, the way it’s done in this movie falls flat. Initially, I didn’t like the ending at all, maybe because I had went into this movie with such high hopes that the reality just disappointed me. After thinking on it for a while, I don’t like the ending anymore than I did when the credits started to roll, but I understand and appreciate the overall sentiment and the story about the lengths humans will go to and the sacrifices they will make for the ones they love. (This along with the performances made me add another star.) 3 out of 5 Stars.
ZOMBIELAND: Two men find themselves the sole survivors in a world overrun by zombies and forge an effective if also initially shaky partnership. Funny where it should be, which is pretty much from beginning to end. Great performances by Harrelson and Eisenberg and there’s a funny cameo that takes this movie right over the top with a nice romance mixed in. 4 out of 5 Stars.
Next on the horizon : THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, THE ROAD, ARMORED, THE LOVELY BONES (read and enjoyed the book and am curious how it will translate to film), AVATAR, LEGION, DAYBREAKERS, THE BOOK OF ELI and TAKERS. That’s it for now anyway.
As always, hope you enjoy this issue of The G - Spot! =====================================================

THIS ISSUE’S NOVEL EXCERPT: SERENA’S SONG by Raina James
“Since I talked so much about my bad boy, Finn "Riff" Logan, I thought it would be appropriate to offer up this PG - rated excerpt from Serena's Song, my 72,000 - word contemporary romance. This scene happens very close to the beginning of the book and sets up the story.”
The subdued ring woke him. Barely. Riff groggily rolled towards the night table, then stopped as the sheet bunched near - painfully around his hips and groin. That woke him up. He snatched the phone out of the cradle and snarled, "What?!" Nothing but a dial tone - - and something was still ringing. The fog cleared a bit more. His cell phone. Which was on the dresser across the room. Crap. You'd think Dan would realize he'd be reachable on the hotel phone until at least the ass - crack of frickin' dawn. Riff untangled himself from the sheet and stumbled naked to the dresser. He squinted at the illuminated keypad and display, which were obscenely bright in the otherwise pitch - black room. No number was listed in the tiny window. The electronic ring sounded again. Riff stabbed at the "talk" button with clumsy fingers. "What?!" "Riff, it's me." "Milo? Do you know what time it is?" He scanned the room but came up with zero in the clock hunt. "Fuck. Okay, I don't know what time it is, but it's still dark." It didn't help that he'd gone to bed pissed about the Tam situation; a restless sleep hadn't improved his mood. His manager was unfazed by Riff's foul temper, though the cause wasn't what he thought. After all these years, he had a pretty good idea of his client's good points. Waking alert and cheerful generally wasn't one of them. "Yeah, sorry 'bout that. But I just found out something I think you'll want to know." That sounded suitably ominous. Riff sat down in the thickly cushioned chair beside the dresser, automatically tossing the matching throw - pillow onto the floor. He sprawled back in the chair. "Yeah?" He was definitely wide awake now. If Milo thought it was worth waking him up for, it must be something important. Or bad. Or important and bad. "I got a tip that Celebrity is doing an expose." Riff felt his irritation both settle and surge. This was something he could handle, had handled. Milo knew that. But another part of him went on alert. From his manager's careful tone, this expose was different. Ignoring the dark premonition, he demanded, "What is it this time? They dig up some nonexistent relatives I've left living in a shack somewhere? Some old transcripts that show my marks sucked and my teachers thought I'd never go anywhere? Oh, wait. They already did that. How 'bout my all - time favorite - - love child with some sweet young thing I've never laid hands on, let alone laid, period." "Not quite. And they're not exactly doing it on you." The bad feeling intensified. "What are you talking about?" The sound of music and laughter came clearly over the line in the dead air left by Milo's silence. Knowing Milo, he was calling from some vitally unimportant see - and - be - seen party, the kind of thing Riff hated being trotted out at. "Milo …" he growled warningly. "They found your girl." "What girl? I told you Milo, I haven't - - " "Beautiful Girl. The one you wrote about." The air in the room felt hot against Riff's face, then burningly cold as the blood drained out of his cheeks and rushed back. He heard a faint plastic crack, and realized he was crushing the tiny cell phone in his hand. With conscious effort, he loosened his fingers. "Riff? You still there?" Riff dropped his head against the back of his chair and rubbed the heel of his hand into the renewed ache behind his forehead. "Yeah, Milo. I'm still here." "Okay. Well, like I said, sorry I woke you. I just thought you'd wanna know." He nodded, as if Milo were standing right there and could see him. He heard someone on the other end of the line call out. Milo's muffled voice responded, then got louder and clearer as he spoke into the phone again. "Right, Riff, if that's everythi - - " Riff jerked upright in the chair. "No!" He cleared his throat and lowered his voice to a less - panicked volume. "Hold on, Milo. Look, I need you to find out a few things and call me back. First, when's the story running. Second, where is she. And third ..." He paused. Was he doing the right thing? Fuck that. "What's her name." Milo's barked laugh was full of disbelief. "You mean you don't know her name?" "I did. She got married." With that, he thumbed the phone off and tossed it back on the dresser, not caring when it skittered across the polished surfaced and dropped to the floor. Oh, shit. Serena. What was he going to do now? Riff slumped back in the chair and stared sightlessly into the darkened room. Would it have been better if he'd never stopped that afternoon? Just kept driving and called a tow? At least then he wouldn't have had to do what he did. But then he never would have known Serena. And that would have been worse. He was sure of it.
RAINA JAMES BIO:
My dad's career as a pilot in the Canadian military took us across the country while I was growing up, eventually landing me in the Ottawa area. A love of words and writing spurred me to pursue a career in journalism. As my author self, I write in a wide variety of genres, from contemporary and science fiction to fantasy (urban and traditional) and paranormal. The thread that binds them all together, though, is romance. I just love a happy ending, even if the hero and heroine have to leap through fire to get there. www.RainaJames.com www.Bookstrand.com http://www.bookstrand.com/product - serenassong - 10978 - 192.html

THIS ISSUE’S SPOTLIGHT AUTHOR: RAINA JAMES: The Interview: GRACIE: I’m excited to have you here at The G - Spot, Raina! Please tell us a little about yourself and how and when you got into writing?
RAINA: Gracie, thanks so much for having me. My love of writing is a spinoff of my love of the written word in general. Being a practical sort, the only real career I saw for myself was journalism. My final push into the world of fiction came about almost eight years ago, when I joined an online writers group. Networking with other writers, talking craft, getting and giving critiques – all those things really helped me grow as a writer and gain the confidence I needed to carve out time to write.
GRACIE: Is there any one thing or person in your life that inspired your writing? Any one thing or person that influenced the genre you write in?
RAINA: Author Kelley Armstrong has been a wonderful mentor to me. She is extremely generous with her time and advice, always willing to give of both to fledgling writers. Her whole attitude is, "Go for it." So, I did.
As for the genres I write in, I write about what I love and read myself. My published books are contemporary romance and futuristic, although I also write high fantasy, urban fantasy and light science fiction.
GRACIE: What do you know now about writing and the publishing industry that you wish you’d known before you started?
RAINA: How hard it is to actually sit down and write! Not just finding the time, but the actual mechanics of writing a story knowing that you're not the only one who will be reading it, so it better be darn good. Also, at this stage of the game, just how much time is involved in simply building an audience, promoting your books and, in particular, promoting yourself as an author – not an easy task for a shy, unassuming Canadian gal.
GRACIE: Please give us a little story behind the story and what was your inspiration behind THREE FOR ALL?
RAINA: When I decided I wanted to try to write my own ménage, I tried to imagine how in the world I could create a scenario where two heterosexual, dominant, equally appealing, but different, men would team up to share the woman they love. Considering the unconventional nature of the relationship they hoped to build, the men would need relative privacy to carry out their seduction of Shelby, hence the remote mountain retreat. How do they know each other? Oh, the men were teenaged rivals for young Shelby's affections, but scared her off by coming on too strong. Why would she come back? Her uncle, their mentor and a very non - judgmental man, knew they all had strong feelings for each other and willed his property to them in hopes of playing matchmaker from beyond the grave. I actually came up with a couple of the love scenes before I fleshed out the characters, but I think it all works to show their distinctive character traits. Gabe has a dark side and Justin is definitely the more easygoing of the two, but between them, they are exactly what the strong - willed Shelby needs.
GRACIE: You’ve come a long way from your first Siren title SERENA’S SONG featuring a “traditional” m/f coupling between Finn and Serena to the multiple f/m/m/m/m partnering of your recent futuristic THE FAMILY JEWEL. Do you find it difficult to maintain a level of emotional attachment between all the parties involved in a multiple - partner story like THE FAMILY JEWEL? Overall, how do you overcome the obstacles, if any, of maintaining believable intimacy in your ménage amour titles?
RAINA: I am a firm believer that that there's a difference between making love and having sex. Without the emotional tie, it's just a physical interaction, whether you're talking two people or five. In Serena's Song, Riff and Serena love each other deeply, and one of the ways they express that is their incredible physical love that is so much more than procreation. The same goes for Shantay, Jerran, Loran, Mikah and Kai, my heroine and heroes in The Family Jewel. Shantay knows her men respect and treasure her, has been raised to believe that of COURSE her mates will love her. The men have also been raised in a culture that respects women as the centre of everything that really matters. They know that each man will be valued for himself, that all are equally important to the family. That's not so very different from a male - female couple. Also, since Shantay behaves slightly differently for each man, she is showing that she cares for their feelings enough to know what they really desire – and to give it to them. As long as lovers are secure in the love and respect of their partners, know that they are stronger together than apart, it doesn't really matter how many people we're talking about.
GRACIE: Of all the stories you’ve written (and you have quite a few tasty morsels ), which is your favorite and why?
RAINA: My favorite story is actually Sinful, which has yet to catch on with readers. I absolutely love the fact that Khariss gets to be the experienced partner in her love affair with Dylan. In a conventional romance, Dylan would be a total alpha male, the perfect hero. He's gorgeous, fun, intelligent, has a good job and, up until now, has been a bit skittish about a permanent relationship. Enter Khariss, with her ties to a naughty sex club and approachable sensuality that grabs Dylan by the tie and yanks him in with a grin. Dylan thought he was a man of the world. And then he got a look at Khariss's world. And he liked it. And he wanted to explore all the naughty, down and dirty things he would never have even thought of before clicking with Khariss. And, wow, O'Grady, the owner of the sex club. Yowza. That man is prime - cut A on the hoof. I'm seriously thinking about writing him his own story because he's just so downright sexy.
GRACIE: I know this is like asking a mother which is her favorite child, but which of your characters is your favorite and why?
RAINA: Finn "Riff" Logan, from Serena's Song, is still my favorite boy. I can picture him in my head – beautiful, talented, confident and a bad boy at heart. But while it seems like he has everything, he'd give it all up to go back and get what really matters – Serena. Even when he was being a jerk, I still rooted for him. And hey, he's a rock star in love with his sweetie. That clinches it for me.
GRACIE: What about your characters makes them unique and why?
RAINA: I try very hard to make my characters as down - to - earth as possible, but also strong people who stand on their own two feet, yet are willing to accept help when they need it. No superheroes here. Rock star Riff is the notable exception, but all the others are people I think you'd stand in line with at the grocery store or sit beside at the coffee shop: Serena owns a small business; so does Khariss, who teaches dance; Dylan works in a bank; Shelby is a chef, but not experienced enough to open her own restaurant; Justin is in construction and Gabe is a business consultant. While The Family Jewel is a futuristic set on another planet, the characters aren't exceptional for where they are, save for Jerran, but that's hardly his fault and he certainly doesn't flaunt it. It's so much easier for a reader to imagine herself as that woman, or with that man, if they can relate to the players.
GRACIE: What is your favorite aspect of the writing process? Your least favorite?
RAINA: My favorite aspect of the writing process is that, hey, I get to write! I can do it when I want, where I want, for how long I want, and make all these puppets – that would be my characters – dance on the end of my string in a world of my making. My least favorite aspect is that it really is hard. It's impossible to predict whether it will be a good writing day or a bad one. I never imagined I could be such a stone carver! Some days, those words flow like water down a spring - swollen stream. Other days, I need an icebreaker to get rid of the jam, only to find out the streambed's drying up.
GRACIE: Are you a pantser or do you outline?
RAINA: I am a total pantser. Sometimes I think my life would be so much easier if I outlined, but I just can't do it. I also have this weird process, in that I do a lot – and I mean A LOT – of thinking before I even start to write. I'm talking weeks. Sometimes longer. Often, I have the bulk of my story written in my head (gee, does that count as plotting?). Then, by the time I approach the keyboard, I usually pound it out fairly quickly, save for a few loose ends that generally become clear by the time I get there.
GRACIE: If you weren’t a writer, what other profession would you have chosen to pursue?
RAINA: Astronaut. But, see, there's this complication – I'd need to be much, much smarter to be accepted to the space program. :lol And have a couple of doctorates under my belt. Oh, but if I could go into space … I'd love it.
GRACIE: Guess that’s where futuristics like THE FAMILY JEWEL come in, LOL. Living vicariously through your characters .
Who are some of your favorite authors and why? Name some of your favorite books. What are some of your favorite genres and why?
RAINA: I have so many favorite authors, it's ridiculous. Well, not really ridiculous, in that I always have something to read, but if I'm reading, that means I'm not writing. It's a conundrum. I adore Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books, Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld, Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series, Jayne Ann Krentz's contemporaries and her historical as Amanda Quick. I also love Jane Feather, in particular Vice and Valentine, Nora Roberts (especially The Reef, Honest Illusions and her Sign of Seven trilogy), Emma Holly, Virginia Henley's A Year and a Day, Stephanie Laurens' Mastered by Love (Dalziel's story, wrapping The Bastion Club series), Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden and Codex Alera books, David Eddings' Belgariad, and let's not forget J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter … Eclectic, I know. So, my favorite genres are contemporary romance, historical romance (particularly Regency England), urban fantasy and high fantasy. I love being taken away to other worlds and other times, and I appreciate sly humor. I despise hopeless or sad situations, so although I may respect an author's writing and appreciate it intellectually, if it's depressing, I won't read it, even if there is a glimmer of happiness.
GRACIE: What are you working on now? What should readers be looking forward to from you in the future?
RAINA: I'm actually doing something new for me – research for a historical romance, and I'm pretty excited about it. I'm learning so much! I also am tentatively working out in my mind a young adult werewolf trilogy I hope to start on immediately after the historical is done. I've got a very basic story arc in mind. Now, to flesh it out. …
I also have a futuristic western, Marshals' Most Wanted, in an upcoming Tasty Treats anthology from Siren's Menage Amour. In that book, my heroes are hot on the trail of a galactic bandit when they meet the human woman destined to be their shared mate. They are ecstatic, but afraid for her safety. She is less than thrilled, and sure she doesn't need any man – or men – to hide behind. Since I'm a huge Firefly fan, MMW was a lot of fun to write, let me tell you.
GRACIE: Do you have a website and/or how can readers contact you?
RAINA: You can find me on the web at http://www.RainaJames.com on Twitter @RainaJames and on Facebook as Raina James, so you can friend me there.
GRACIE: Where and how can readers purchase and/or read samples of your work?
RAINA: Through my website http://www.RainaJames.com, my publisher http://www.Bookstrand.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and a slew of ebook sellers.
GRACIE: What advice do you have for beginning writers?
RAINA: Get involved with a good critique group, one whose members will tell you the truth about your writing, and not go ballistic when you do the same about theirs (nicely, and in a constructive way, of course). There is nothing more inspiring than being able to talk craft with fellow writers, to gripe together, share triumphs, brainstorm and get the kick in the pants you need to get writing. If nothing else, even a glimmer of a competitive nature will make you produce at least something to share.
GRACIE: Anything else about yourself or your writing you’d like to share?
RAINA: Some of the best friends I've made are writers. I am constantly amazed by how helpful and gracious my fellow writers are. It doesn't seem to matter if you're a best - selling author or a newbie just starting out, almost everyone I have met has been incredibly generous with time, advice, you name it. I only hope that I will always be able to follow the inspiring examples I've seen throughout the publishing world.
GRACIE: Thanks so much for taking time from your busy schedule Raina, to share yourself and your work with us at The G - Spot and giving us a little insight into your writing and the writing process! We’ll let you get back to writing those wonderful books you write! All the best!
RAINA: Gracie, thank YOU for hosting me here on the G - Spot (here's where I usually giggle like a Catholic schoolgirl sneaking a peak at Playgirl). You've got me thinking about my methods and my characters, which is a wonderful thing. Usually I just do, instead of analyzing. It was fun to really consider why my characters are the way they are.
