Wow this year is going by quickly. April found me really busy finishing the book was a relief and I managed to get down to the desert for a brief break with author pal Robena Grant (aka Schaerf). Other authors understand the aftermath of meeting deadline. Incessant hours render you comatose and barely able to function. The nice thing about recovering around and understanding person is that they allow you to
stare at the ceiling, babble incoherently, and support your need for sleep and relaxation.

Needless to say, I slept and swam in the nice 90 degree plus weather. I left my mountain dwelling to bask in weather 40-45 degrees warmer and coming back was a shock.

April and May also landed me with a couple of last minute events. The “Tea for Zoo” fundraiser was fun. If you are ever out this way in the Spring don’t miss the Bed & Breakfast Experience in Big Bear. For a mere $15 you get to tour 10 of the establishments, snack and receive a recipe from each place you visit.

This month I also received sponsorship from Bear Valley Pet & Animal Supply. They bought a series of radio ads to run my “Ark Animal Answers.” Each spot brings the community commentary about breaking news or tidbits concerning pet and animal care.

You might have heard about the anniversary of the San Fransisco earthquake. Did you know that I've been featured in the book, "The Man Who Predicts Earthquakes: Jim Berkland?" The author took some of my expert comments on pet disaster behavior and included excerpts from my booklet within the text. Jim Berkland uses lost and found ads as an aid to predicting geological activity.

My question(s) for you for this month: What are you doing with your pet this summer?

There are some new pet trends hitting the news. The first airport kennel has been established which may help with some of the lost pet traveler and related issues. Here is an edited version of the official blurb:

“Continental Airlines unveiled an animal kenneling facility at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, the first airline-owned kennel situated on airport property in the United States.

This new service will be offered to the carrier's
four-legged customers that utilize the acclaimed PetSafe service.

The facility boasts approximately 1,100 square feet of space equipped to provide the ultimate in care for animals traveling on Continental. Services include separate caging areas for all species, separate ventilation systems, exercise runs and full
grooming facilities. The kennel, located inside Continental's Houston cargo facility, will provide care 24-hours a day, seven days a week, for animals that have stopovers or overnights in Houston.

To operate this unique facility, Continental has retained the services of Kingwood Pet Kamp, the airline's kennel operator for the last seven years. Kingwood Pet Kamp will provide comprehensive animal handling -- cleaning crates and cages, exercising the animals, rendering emergency care when necessary, and grooming and bathing services on request."

One of my PSA’s concerns “hot dogs.” Even at a low 72 degrees pets can suffer from heatstroke, or the complications from it, if left in a vehicle for just a few minutes. Leave pets at home and provide shade, water, misters and air conditioning—it may save a critter’s life.

3. Critter Chronicles: Summer Heat
===============================================
Summer weather presents many challenges to pets. Ticks, mosquitoes, dangers of heartworm, burrs, sunburned noses, and burnt paws are a few of the hazards. You’ll want to be alert and take precautions.

The most dismissed danger to pets is the summer heat. Warm rays turn automobiles into ovens. Less than ten minutes in a hot car can kill a pet.

Some cities have instituted hefty fines for leaving pets in vehicles. If you come across a pet in distress call animal control, humane officer, or the local sheriff’s department.

Canines can only cool themselves through panting and licking their paws. Overheated animals should be immersed in cool, not cold, water and rushed to a veterinary hospital.

In the heat of the summer make sure you always carry a cool water supply for pets. Ice cubes melt down into a cool refresher but you can also freeze water in an empty gallon judge and tote it with you.

Shade is imperative. Make sure you provide an escape for pets that is also well ventilated. Dogs and other animals can wear fashionable visors to protect their noses from the sun.

In arid regions, place misters around the shaded areas. They provide added relief for all species.

Leave your pet indoors in an air-conditioned room during heat waves. Avoid trouble when the mercury rises by exercising pets only during the early morning hours, at dusk, or after dark.

This month I am launching two clubs. Advanced registration is required and all participants must be human and dog friendly. Enrollment is free! Make new friends, tire your pet out, and have fun. Pet partners must keep animals under control at all times. Bring a leash, clean up aids and water. Locations rotate so you MUST pre-registar at (800) 818-7387.
