I talked to the cow and this is what she said
When I asked her which way to go.
“Swing your tail from side to side and sway your little head
As you walk along the brook beneath the sun’s strong glow.”
“But I want to know which way--not how--
To walk the way I should go.”
But the words were wasted upon this cow
For she walked on with a beefy low.

I ran upon a porky sow
And I asked her which way to go.
“Through all of the mud you must plow
To keep your blood’s healthy flow.”
“But I did not ask about my health.
Just tell me which way I should go.”
The sow just snorted and spoke of her wealth
And waded in the mud to and fro.

The next stop was the rooster who stood so proud,
Upon the fence pole above.
When I asked him the way he just crowed really loud
And sat on the fence like a dove.
“Won’t you please tell me the way?”
I asked but to no avail.
He just sat there so still the rest of the day
And bellowed out quite a wail.

The sheep that I saw were grouped in a bunch;
Munching on grass and clover.
I did not want to interrupt their lunch,
But I needed this thing to be over.
So I walked up to them and asked of my way:
“Please tell me the way that I need.”
And they said what all sheep do happen to say
Which is “Follow your shepherd’s lead.”

So I asked where to find this shepherd of mine
And they spoke in a unison way.
“It is when you seek that you shall find
The shepherd you search for today.”
“Where do I look?” I asked them all
As I waited for them to say.
“Inside your heart you’ll hear the call
And then you’ll know the way.”
