He's the man on the street
listening to the party seep
from three floors above him

Once he had a place
but the booze and crack
and the woman who split

Drew lines in his face
put monkeys on his back
and left him nothing but shit

He needs something to eat
somewhere to sleep
but mostly someone to love him

Invite him in out of the cold
away from the crap he carries
to share your food drink and song

He'll doubtless try to steal,
to scam, to put one over on you
it's just his way of life

It's just his normal deal
it would be your way too
if you live the law of the knife

He'll be dead before he's old
unmourned the day he's buried
from the streets he's known too long.

It truly is sad. Can't imagine what it would be like to be in his shoes. You have nothing and worse yet, you have no one! Well penned, Roger!

God bless,

Sandie.

Really well written. I've been there at times. Now I don't get invited to parties or anywhere else.

Been there done all of that, except for maybe extreme drugs that you have to shoot, could never do that to myself...but lived out there and know what love can do and what will happen if he never finds it...RUFUZ and ed

"but mostly someone to love him"

You can't bottle it, sell it, shoot up with it or swallow it (well, maybe you can swallow it) but that's the remedy, tried and true.

Roger, You mix the harsh and the tender and your voice is true. katy xox

Some have to test the edge of life, and some fall off. Good write.

In a world that concentrates on looks and things, where skin and success are the most sought,we can't help but see the kind of character you describe. Like Sherry said society fails to address
the cause. The cause is mostly a lack of reverence for Creator.
Therefor respect for creation is minimal. Your excellent poem
stirred my senses;-)

Somewhere along the way, we as a society seem to fail these people. They have no morals, no honor, they don't know the feeling of satisfaction of a job well done, they have no regard for themselves or anyone else. How sad it would be to live like that with no feelings of self-respect or self-worth. It is a life filled with nothing.
Take care,
Sherry
