What man has not at least touched upon this kind of envy?

Envy

I dwell within the mortal sin of envy

Of he who owns the paling tones of blue

In eyes that are the brightened star of early

Day when height of want will ever haunt anew.

Her symmetry is poetry eternal—

A deity of mystery contained

In breaking dawns on golden lawns so vernal—

Like daffodils on Heaven’s hills, ordained.

He seems content, his passion spent, abated—

He never knew the depth of blue, her eyes,

Yet were she mine and none of thine (I’ve waited),

I’d not my fill of cyan thrill and sighs.

That I might touch and hold as much lithe sweetness

From morning kiss to evening bliss with her,

Would be an end that would transcend completeness

Where jealousy might never be astir.
