'Indifference is everything',
he said to me, this guy,
he must have just been joking,
it must have been a lie.
I looked at him and answered
'You know that can't be true ,
just look at us, and how things are,
is life that bad to you?'

He shook his head and closed his eyes,
then looked at me and smiled,
'you have so much left in your life,
you're just a naive child.
You haven't seen the worst of it,
the pain that tears us down,
you have to see things as they are,
just take a look around.'

And so I looked around and saw
the things of which he'd told,
the pain in peoples' faces
as real pain did unfold.
I glanced back then and tried to say,
that I knew what he meant,
but then I saw he wasn't there,
and what I'd seen was sense.
