maybe she was just a somebody that I met
maybe she was just a friend
maybe she was just a habit I've broken yet
maybe she was just pretend
but all I have is a picture, a photograph
of a girl that I once knew
it's all I have left that I can remember with
all that is left that was true
and on the back is a name that I must have prayed
somewhere far back in the past
I guess she was here and then somehow she went away
what we had just didn't last
and all that left is an image so beautiful
it catches my breath when I look
I found it by accident it was a miracle
between the leaves of a book
and now and then I take out and I look at it
wondering who could she be
did I forget or am I blocking it out
was it her fault or was me
am I crazy
or imagining things?
and yet
sometimes at night when I climb from the night so deep
find myself calling her name
I realize that I must have been far asleep
but I still weep just the same
whisper "Maria Maria where have you gone?
When will you come back again?"
and when I finally get to the start of dawn
I know that love has an end
I get up and go through the motions while I'm at work
try not to think of my dreams
try not to think of how I can be such a jerk
coming apart at the seams
all of this drama from a single photograph
I feel just like a fool
I tell my friends and they always want to laugh
like I was left back at school
"Haven't you learned yet that life must go on and on
love must be left when it dies?"
but when I found Maria in a photograph
it took me quite by surprise
I cannot help what the thought of her means to me
meant to me from the start
I cannot help it if I can never be free
of her hold on my heart

Reviews of "PHOTO OF MARIA song lyrics by Joel Sattler"
This poem has a very lyrical quality to it that will lend itself to a song. It also is very bittersweet and that goes long way in carrying a song to the public. It also reminded me of a beautiful lady named Maria who has lost her husband for 20 years and still mourns his unjust incarceration. We are just friends but could've been more.
