Mary Magdalene came in the dark,
came in the dark to the tomb to weep.
There she found the stone rolled away
-- many hundredweight of hard stone
like a pebble rolled away.
Mary had come to weep as one weeps
for a dead lover. Mary had come to weep
as one weeps for a dead brother. Mary had
come to weep as one mortal weeps
at the death of another.
Mary had come to weep in the face of Death
confronting Jesus’ death, and her own, with
the only weapon she had: a mortal’s tears.
Mary had come to weep instead she found
The stone rolled away and the tomb empty.
Frightened, she ran to Peter and to John
"They've taken Him away! They have taken
Him out of the tomb and laid Him I know
not where." Peter and John ran to the tomb
and ran home again. Seeing, they didn't understand.
Mary returned to the tomb weeping. Angels came
to comfort her but she would not be comforted.
Not by mere angels would she be comforted,
her grief was too raw, too wild, too sacred
for angelic comforters,
Mary turned from the tomb to the garden, there
The Gardener she spied. “Sir, tell me where you
have laid him and I will take him away.” “Mary",
He said. And a heart near burst with sorrow
Near burst with joy.
He is risen, indeed! This is a wonderful retelling, John. As our pastor said this morning, we must learn to "see" with "Easter eyes." Great work here. Dawn
