the black horse

We've all riden the black horse...




in the corner of the pasture
lives an old black horse,
with wicked, sad eyes
tail of mist and mane of smoke

most days you don't notice him
and he ignores you. he is a
handsome brute with his
mane of smoke, tail of mist


but do not ride him


the horse will take you
straight to the shadow lands
of false and abiding sorrow
constant, nagging, debilitating

do not ride the black horse
with his sad eye and smoky mane
for the place he will take you
is not a place you want be.

the sun never shines there
and it never gets dark
there time passes slowly,
and days flit trippingly by—

time and days are the same there
there is nothing, nothing you can do
so you wait for something to happen
you wait for something to change



but nothing does


do not ride the black horse
with its sad eye and smoke mane
do not ride the black horse---
the black horse,
do not ride

Wow! Love this analogy, John. I would say ride him but not for long or he will "take you to a place you don't want to be." Been there. Fantastic write...

Far too many of us have already saddled up the old black horse and allowed him to carry us into the twilight of our nothingness. More and more I see those with vacant eyes trying to recall what it is about their life that they need to know. Excellent poetry!
