I heard Sig berating Charlie as I opened to my shop
“Get out of my doorway you lazy pig. Why don’t you
get a job and quit bothering hard working people.
Sig was at it again: His favorite rant; his favorite target.
Luck, hard work and a flamboyant disregard for
natural justice had made Sid rich -- just as
ill luck, disease and a want of compassion had left
Charlie homeless.
On his good days he was as diligent
a worker as any on Dominion St.
of us would hire him or odd jobs,
paying him in meals and lodging
at the old King’s Hotel.
But the Kings had been bought
and fancied up by a group that
included Sig
–no more room for Charlie
There was a sick sound of a head hitting pavement,
Then Sig’s began using language that, as a
self proclaimed pillar of the church, he realty
shouldn’t have known,
“Wake up! Wake up! You …” When I got there
Sig was trying to wake Charlie by kicking him.
but Charlie was beyond waking.
The Coroner came and picked up Charlie,
(at last, there was a place for him on this earth)
The police came and picked up Sig still loudly
proclaiming his innocence, and blaming
Charlie for freezing to death on his doorstep
