I may be south of Georgia today but it still isn't my true southern home. Upon reflecting on Dixie in the spring, I came upon a night ride with every sense open to the beauty around me.No one can beat my smile after rereading my own tribute to a Dixie night ride.
riding into a warm night
the sunroof opened to air
wysteria smells afloating
lightening bugs everywhere
rebel jasmine blooming
cherry blossoms afloat
flung along by a swift breeze
from some storm still remote
the moon a crest upon heavens
stars too many to count
free as a bird on this highway
as springtime virtues amount
it's a pleasure to breath in this beauty
the South so pretty and proud
my heart sings visions of Dixie
in a voice sopranoed and loud
cresting a hill out of heaven
surrounded by God's own display
toward midnight her shine is around me
breaking her into a new day.
Exquisite from the beginning! I love your very first line because it seems like a simple statement at first, but when you think about it, riding on a warm night is just a ride, while "riding INTO a warm night" brings anticipation. You just know this will be a ride to remember, and it is.
I like the smells that are "a-floating" and the "rebel jasmine," and then "flung along by a swift breeze from some storm still remote."
Gorgeous work; you should be Miss Poetic Dixie!
Superb! Loved those drives... miss Hotlanta. Eye candy 'round every curve. However, I've found nothing more sweet to smell than new-mown hay. Dying clover gives us its last best.
This accolade to Dixie, as it were, should be submitted to the tourist information provider for inclusion in its itenerary for visitors not only to read but also to get a feel of Dixie.
'Riding' conjures up a visual of you, the moon and your shadow cruising together down the twilight highway.
Vivid visions of your night ride dance in my mind and I wish I was there to sing with you into the velvet southern night! What a great experience this poem is Susan! the art a perfect match!ET
This causes gooseflesh to pop up on my flesh as I see the beauty surrounding you. Your painted picture opens a world of images and beauty that God gave the world to capture and hold onto for as long as the body lives. It's a fantastic tribute to the south.
...and as you close your eyes by any river there, you can hear that tired bass voice singing "old man river" as you hope not to meet with a red-coats patrol.
A sweet one this is.
...all the beauty...of a South I have yet to see...is riding on the hopes...that I will someday know these visions you paint so well...in my memory.

'so pretty and proud'. Oh, this definitely is one of my favorites. The length is perfect too! I guess not everyone has experienced those warm night scents you mention. That would be sad. This one needs to get published. Send it off to several zines. And keep them coming.
You are nature in bloom! Beautiful imagery and I can smell the Jasmine in the wind!
Missed you much!
Be safe, and I wish you peace, love, and light, my special friend

I just finished reading your poem to my wife, she said it was beautiful . . . It of course is beautiful, but I am used to beautiful meter and rhyme and true, true southern poetry written by the bell of the South, my friend Susan K de Vegter . . .
The South rings proudly in liquid lines of pleasure - don't matter where you live, your hospitality comes through to those not fortunate to call Dixie home. Beautiful! Welcome back, I've missed you -
All of the elements of sense are here! So pleasing to the inner senses, Susan...free bird is good...there's a lot of that going around these spring days...I'm ridin' shotgun with ya, rebel! Let's stop and get a tank full of gas and lay down some rubber...crank some Charlie Daniels and head on A Night Ride in Dixie.

Excellent write Susan. The south still beckons me at times and while reading this I could picture Stone Mountain standing proud against an early evening sky. Very well done my friend. God bless.
In "A Touch of Your Presence" are words that would inspire, encourage and strengthen one's soul when faced with challenges and difficulties and to know the awesomeness of God's power.
When two men hit the reset button and decide to go out looking for the good in the world, they not only find it but also a lot more.

"A Night Ride in Dixie" diffuses magnolias' scent to please Erato. This poem was written with a quill under the light of Mother Poet's smile’s.
