One hundred and eighty six thousand
They say is the speed of light.
But one hundred eighty six thousand
Is not the speed of sight.
How long must the abused suffer
Before our mouths cry shame?
Before we're spurred to action,
Before we share their pain?
How long will we sidestep the lonely
And the unlovely bear our disgust?
Before we can see the people within
Are people no different to us?
Does light slow within our eye
As it penetrates barriers unseen?
Or is there another universe within
And another trillion miles to beam?
Or perhaps in the eye of the passerby
It's a mirror that we view,
And the image we flee is the image called "me"
And the one we hide from's not you.
Maybe in your eyes it's us we despise
And from whom we hide our face.
Unable to bear the sameness we share
It's ourselves we cannot embrace.
But if we could see the one we call "me"
In a new light perhaps we could spy
Someone to love as the light from above
Reflects from the depth of their eye.
One hundred and eighty six thousand
They say is the speed of light.
But it only takes one on a cross in the sun
To conquer the speed of sight.
