DADDY’S WORDS
Daddy was a good old boy,
wise way beyond his years.
He rode me hard throughout my life
caused a small river full of tears.
But, he tried to teach me right from wrong,
I just didn’t know til’ after he died.
And, if I didn’t learn from him,
it wasn’t cause he never tried.
Daddy’s words contained a message
way more important than any song.
Daddy wanted the whole wide world
just to learn to get along.
Daddy said, “There’s a time to fight,
and a time to walk away.
The wise man knows the difference.
the foolish, nearly always stay.”
He said, “You only fight to save,
you never fight to prove.
If you fight for any other reason,
it’s likely a very foolish move.”
Daddy said, “The smartest might be right,
but the toughest usually wins most fights.
Course it really doesn’t matter much,
they’ll read you both your rights.”
He said, “Fighting doesn‘t prove a thing,
win, lose or draw.
If I’m the toughest, but you are right,
wouldn’t you rather draw for longest straw?”
Daddy’s words come back to me
now that I’m full grown
and I’d like to pass his message on
to a couple boys of my own.
If they could hear my daddy’s words,
if I could put them in a song,
maybe then they’d know there’s honor
in just learning to get along.
Then, Daddy’s lessons taught,
would again be lessons learned.
And I think,,,, way down deep,,,,
that’s what Daddy always yearned.
