She's Always Standing There

This is one I wrote a number of years ago, after losing my wife to cancer. Those first few months, maybe even the first couple years, you just go on. You don’t necessarily want to, but you do. People ask you how you are doing and you lie to them and say you’re doing fine, but you’re not.

Now it’s been 24 years and I have a wonderful lady in my life. I no longer have to lie. I really am doing just fabulous.

SHE’S ALWAYS STANDING THERE

Last week at the airport
and one day at the mall.
I’ve seen her nearly every day
since she answered that fatal call.

Driving down Old Dixie,
heading for the county fair,
thought I saw her car
up ahead somewhere.

In line to buy my ticket
thought I saw her standing there.
Who was that guy she was with?
When did she change her hair?

Saw her twice last evening
and twice the day before.
Ever since she left me,
I see her more and more.

Last week at the barber shop
waiting my turn in the chair,
looking out the window,
thought I saw her standing there.

Never does she speak,
but she knows that I still care
and every time I turn around
she’ll be standing there.

I’ve heard the only cure,
when your true love has been taken,
is get out there and start again,
pretend you’re not so shaken.

I’ve been looking every night
in my favorite neighborhood bar.
I see her lips, her face, her body
she's still my shining star.

Last night I was fixin’ to get lucky
with a friendly neighborhood lass,
when suddenly she showed up
right there inside my glass.

She was there when I went to bed.
She was there when I got up.
She was there when I brewed my coffee,
she was right inside my cup.

I just can’t seem to get over her
cause I see her everywhere
and every time I turn around
she’s always standing there…..

She's always standing there, REVISITED

….Those were my very words
just a few short years ago,
as I was recovering from a loss
many of us one day come to know.

Looking back, I know I was lucky
that I shared so much of her life
No one that I’ve ever known
has had a more loving wife.

But life continues on,
you can’t just call it quits,
you eventually smile again
trying to make the best of it.

Eventually, if you’re lucky,
you meet somebody new
and finally you figure out
it’s not always about just you.

It took me over 20 years
but my smile is now a grin
and I couldn’t be more happy
with the relationship I’m now in.

Life has much to offer,
but you have to go out and look.
I figured out I’d never find it
with my nose stuck in a book.

After years of being alone
one day I decided to get serious,
a popup came on my screen
and I became real curious.

It was an advertisement
for an online dating service
offering a chance to meet a lady
and I didn’t have to be nervous.

We talked for over a month
before meeting face to face,
but ever since that first meeting
we often share each others space.

We don’t have a lot of time left,
but we take advantage of every day
We’ll spend our remaining time together
facing whatever comes our way.

This beautiful heartfelt poem is one of my favorites from your book "The Pursuit of Life." Each time I read it I can feel the pain of losing someone loved so much and how you must have suffered alone many times with your pain, unsuspecting of your family and friends, who I'm sure would have loved to help ease that pain if they could. It took way to many years but now you have found someone who has done that for you. Rejoice in that blessing from God.

Loving again doesn't mean you have to give up what you lost. Quite the opposite, you appreciate what you lost. Patrick
