Dumbest poem I ever wrote, quite a few of mine get my vote. "Spelling Errors," was one, now some aim the gun. Peers who helpfully correct, now feel I'm a paranoid reject.
I welcome good hearted correction, but not pompous arrogant suggestion. "Spelling errors" was dumb, but it came from my own inner scum. The inner child of writing remorse, took over my pens directional course.
Okay. You hear it all the time. Write what you want to write and be satisfied with yourself. If that's so, then you can start by not writing apologetic poems. If you're happy with your spelling errors and typos, then be happy and ignore the people who point them out. If I pointed out all the spelling errors and typos I see on AD, I wouldn't have time to write my own stuff. And most of the writers around here wouldn't appreciate it if I did it anyway. It's hard to know who wants to be published seriously and who doesn't. So many folk just write to let off steam.
But you know what pisses me off, Grady? When I have a poem posted for three weeks, look up and see a big-azz error in it after 15 people have read it and said wonderful things and nobody's bothered to tell me that I have a very obvious misspelling. Somebody had to see it. I think that sucks. It's like being a woman at a party in a fabulous designer gown but with the slip hanging all night. You know all the other women had to have seen your slip's hanging, but no one was kind enough to tell you. What happens to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" in these circumstances? There's a difference between giving a friend a heads up to help them look even better and tearing a friend down so you feel better. Yet sometimes the friend getting the tip thinks it's a put down no matter how kindly you tell them.
If writing is about therapy for you, Grady, then by all means, throw whatever you want on this screen. Treat your writing like finger painting--whatever comes out, comes out. However, if it's about craft and making it easier for readers to get what you're saying as well as sharing yourself, if you want to improve and grow as a writer, then be open to help. If you want to achieve excellence in the field of writing, Grady, be wary of people who always have only good things to tell you. I can't think of one artist who's become great without taking some hard knocks.
That being said, I was under the impression that AD is not a workshop site but a showcase; therefore, I'm surprised that anyone's taken the time to tell you about a typo. We don't critique here. We cheerlead and encourage and that's fine by me. It's a great break from the workshop sites where all you get is people criticizing the hell out of you no matter how good you are. Like my last sentence, someone would redline it because it ended in a linking verb. LOL. Somebody must really like you here, Grady, and think you have potential if he or she's trying to proofread or edit your work. I charge folk for that service.

Please pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, its all smoke and mirrors...(Remember the Wizard of Oz?) I see this happening here and there around AD, and I do think its a shame......People who enjoy writing write under all different circumstances.....happy, excited, rushed, TIRED even, and when you are not totally centered, well we all phuck up.....make mistakes......and who gives a chit? Right?!?!? I don't I am just happy to have made a few lines that rhyme, and if I go back later I will see my errors, I have had a few tell me here and there something was wrong....you know what? If thats what it takes to make their day....they can have that little bit of superiority.....they are needy, not me.....and I doubt that you are either...You had your say, and vented.....Good for you :)
and you can ignore...those negatives volleys....and just continue to please yourself and the others that read you....
Just make you happy! Geeze, you have written a book already, and have attained a college degree!! Thats wonderful!!! Be proud!!! Me? I am a dropout.....I admire anyone who finishes what they start......KEEP WRITING!! pax & hugs........Anita :)
