A poet I use to like,

wrote one poem,

that made me take a hike.
I climbed higher each day,
trying to stay out of the way.
I tried to ignore,
poetic taste poor,
made excuses,
for the racial name abuses.

Now this poet has to excuse me,
on this poetic related spree.
Racism is so hateful,
it moves one to be ungrateful.
I no longer appreciate,
so these poems I initiate.

This is the year 2005,
quite a few don't tolerate
that racial jive.
Don't poem about it,
please re-route it!

Black folks hate

the word begining in "n."
even in this poetic den.

G

Good for you for stating your position, Grady. When I lived in Ohio, I heard that word a lot, and I also tasted the flavor of prejudice based upon skin color. It was a complete culture shock for me, coming from Los Angeles, where more times than once I was the only anglo in a group. Growing up in a place where there were representatives from all cultures, colors and religions, I never learned prejudice, for if I had, often I would have been alone. It made me sick when I heard those words in the Midwest and also when I was shunned, called disgusting names and threatened for accepting all groups of people within my circle of friends.
Take care,
Sherry
