The statue of liberty has had clothing malfunctions;
the rippling garb stretches through time
She, naked to the city
watches over the tired, the poor,
the sightseers who buy 5.00 figurines,
the hungry who can't swim to shore
being caught in the eddy
of East River rivulets of smoke and
urine and
dead bodies

The 4th of July
2001
the people gathered in urinetown
on the east side of the five points
there was no light to leap
from the heavy deep black plumes
as each gunshot rage broke sound

Jews for Jesus stood on the corner,
handing out pamphlets that say
Hooray for Yashue
I don't know that I trust them
fundamentalist protelysing makes me wary

Cops eat hot dogs,
I ask to sell a poem to one
declined
Later a group of fine people
buy a dual language poem
translated from Cien Sonnetos de Amor
for some soda and food
the day was good
