A tribute to my brother and all his "Calendar Girls"
M*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He takes out the old shoebox from under his bed.
Dust so thick you could write your name in it.
All the letters were still there.
All the pictures of the girls.
Some even without names.
Simply forgotten.
Page after page…
Picture after picture.
Month after month.
Laden with the same sweet, falsely-imposed feelings.
Just a different girl.
Each time.
“I love you…”
“Goodbye…”
Heartbreak after heartbreak
Girl after girl
Month after month
Alone.
Oh, Mariah, you've captured something I've never known, but can feel...this aches and still has the loving, yet sisterly feel that makes it alive for me. Love this, and an interesting possibly common sadness of boys with a grace and a real honesty, I can't help but feeling along with you, excellent piece, and am not surprised!
Just like your brother and what was it you called it? "Flavor of the month"?But listen....from his mistakes you learned a valuable lesson. Pretty good memory and funny rather than sad...for me and I was there.
Excellent work, Mariah! The sadness comes off in layers...
Mariah, I think most guys can identify with your brother. I guess in his case it is sad because memory is not a substitute for reality. Or is it? Bill Murray
