Poetic Spirit

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

Recently, I overheard some criticism of poetry and the poets who choose to write it. I wrote this poem in response to the comments and to share my belief of this art we enjoy.

Thursday, September 4, 2008

My spirit can’t be broken
My faith is far too great
A small and worthy token
My life is lived by fate
Others may not accept me
They may think what they will
But, I know what I can be
If I embrace my skill.

To some, these thoughts on paper
Are meaningless and dense
Verses destined to taper
As future worlds commence
Yet, these words are my calling
I’ll leave each one behind
Some might find this appalling
My poems brings peace of mind.

My spirit is my essence
My beauty and my core
These words, in their existence
Are feelings I adore
Beliefs I often treasure
For I know others who
Enjoy, beyond all measure
The work that poets do.

My paper is my vessel
My pencil guides my course
When heart and mind must wrestle
My spirit is my force
Despite these choppy waters
Of naysayers abound
My poems shall bless my sunset
As the best gifts I’ve found.

This is beautiful Jill. The best part about poetry is the fact that we can express ourselves as individuals and release our spirits for the whole world to see which you have done beautifully in this poem.Take good care of yourself and don't let anybody kill your poetic spirit

Dear Jill,

A very nice piece. I especially liked:

Despite these choppy waters
Of naysayers abound
My poems shall bless my sunset
As the best gifts I’ve found.

Sincerely,

Alan Busch

Jill, I find when I read my own writing, that I like it the best. That is because I resonate with my own spirit that sprang forth with the words I wrote. I do not primarily write poetry, but stories or articles about people or things that I am passionate about, and hope others might pick up on that flame. Your words will only resonate with those attuned to the same spiritual frequencies. Perhaps, the deaf, dumb and blind might just as well express their displeasure and go their own way. For to persuade to the intellectually stone-cold dead, and instant gratification seeking masses that something is worth being felt, is to assume a stone has a heart.
Best Regards,
Rockie

i agree with rose--the writer writes from the heart--i appreciate that freedom and that i may not agree with all the philosophies out there, i sure don't expect others to agree with mine necessarily, but if any do and if one is inspired, moved, whatever-life is good--and i am glad that i wrote what i felt

Hello Jill,

I like this poem very much - it redeems us all who write from our hearts what we feel to be pure and lovely, praiseworthy, and true,
encouraging and comforting, writing to bless not to hurt, lifting each other through words that touch..."for the good man brings good things out of the good stored in his heart."

Thank you Jill,
Cynthia

Very well said Jill. Poetry does indeed bring peace of mind to many and this is why we do it. God bless you my friend.

Jill,
This is beautiful work. I've always thought a poet bares his or her soul in the poems they write. I love reading and writing poems and would not think to be critical of anothers work. Their heart and soul went into it.

Many blessings,
~Linda

"My poems bring peace of mind," that line states all, above the rest.
