October Baseball

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A poem for the 8 MLB playoff teams, now vying for the World Series title.

On a personal note -- the tried and true bleed Cubbie Blue. GO CUBS!!!!!!

Monday, September 29, 2008

In April, another long season began
Baseball in October was everyone’s plan
Each team remained tough at home and on the road
Striving for the reward they felt they were owed
We have reached October; now, eight teams continue
Eight World Series dreams will be known in each venue
The playoffs are here and a new era rises
A time filled with hope and so many surprises.

For some clubs, the journey has been long and pained
For others, a drought which cannot be explained
The past does not matter; eight teams have achieved
Their postseason trips, because their hearts believed
Sound offense and defense helped to pave the way
For the clubs embarking on postseason play
All eight teams have proven their greatness and worth
Now, each franchise aims for a World Series berth.

Baseball in October is played by the best
Eight teams who stood higher than all of the rest
Each won their division or league’s wildcard
Their seasons were hallowed, as each battled hard
For five months, these teams kept the playoffs in sight
Longing to be where they now stand, on this night
Their hopes will continue, as each pitch is hurled
But, only one can be the best in the world.

Yes, the boys of October will have their fun, fans will be riveted on every run, but when all is said and done, the World Series crown goes to only one. The rest get no fame but lots of fan money in consolation.

Hi Jill,I love baseball and I love to keep up with it.I can only imagine how you would feel if the Cubs win it all.100 years since they haven't won a world series. That is surreal.Maybe it might be the Cubs vs the Red Sox.I wish the Mets were in the playoffs since that is my team, but they are not lol.I wish those old timers who were at the last game at Shea would play in that game against the Marlins instead of the current players.Well there's always next year.I want to wish you good luck with the Cubs in the playoffs, take good care of yourself

Jill,

I love baseball. This poem is absolutely wonderful. My team didn't make the playoffs this year, so it's a little sad, but always next year!

I love baseball, myself: going to the game, watching it on TV, doesn't matter. Too bad my teams are not part of the top eight ... *sigh* The hapless Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers ... gonna take a miracle. Maybe next year (say that EVERY year). A base clearing, grand slam type of poem - well done, Jill!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
