In this age of wealth and bustle
People change faster than time
Friendships fade, amid the hustle
Gone before they’ve reached their prime
Words are uttered without motive
Tossed about like ships at sea
‘til the wick of friendship’s votive
Burns in ancient history.
On one day, these friendships prosper
On the next, they’ve turned to dust
Why are these bonds viewed as proper
At the start, they’re lacking trust
One side sees a hopeful increase
From the gaining of a friend
The other sees a dated lease
After which friendship is to end.
Whatever happened to the days
When everyone spoke from the heart
Friendships were formed to last always
Even if miles or worlds apart
The times when one’s good deeds were praised
And treated with utmost respect
These questions should never need raised
But, in this age, oh.... what the heck!
Cling tightly to that one good friend
If, indeed, you’ve been blessed by one
Allegiances now meet an end
Sometimes, before really begun
To those who share a lifelong bond
I wish you well, as you advance
For to find someone who remains fond
Has become quite a game of chance!

But these days we are such a media/entertainment based society, that if we can't switch what we want "on and off" as easy as that... few will bother to invest the time it takes to create and develope a friendship that will last. We park ourselves in front of the tv., the computer, the video screen; if we don't like it, we switch channels or venues. Simple. Only people with heart don't function like that. And once people disconnect from the stereo, or remove the phone-extension from their ears... maybe there's a chance to smile and meet. It takes some way of human interaction to connect;
the mechanics of technology leave me cold. (So we have places like this to affirm our humanity. But it's still at a long arm's length away. And not near as "close" should be to be real.)
But what do I know?
You described it well.
