Galveston’s Heart

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

On September 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike ravaged the entire upper Texas coastline, leaving the Houston/Galveston area with indescribable destruction.

By far, Galveston Island fared the worst and for those of us, like myself, who have spent much of our lives in this region, it is painful to see the carnage that Ike left in its wake.

We will rebuild; Galveston will recover and the Island will, one day, be as beautiful and as strong as it was, prior to Hurricane Ike's wrath.

I dedicate this poem to the City of Galveston, her residents, and the thousands of people who call the Island, their "summer home."

Poem Artwork

A beautiful island, peaceful and surreal
Where waters of green embrace golden sand
A place where true comfort is easy to feel
As rest and enjoyment reign o’er her land
A small slice of Heaven on the Texas coast
Her famed history and her glory are known
Filled with accolades many are proud to boast
For over the years, Galveston’s strength has shown.

This beautiful island has weathered great storms
Each challenge has been met and conquered in stride
Through turmoil and hardship, her character forms
Her will to continue is never denied
Galveston and her residents ascend from their knees
Facing every struggle that batters their shore
Heartache and destruction may ride ‘cross their seas
But, Galveston Island shall shine, evermore.

The will of this island is captured within
‘tis seen in the courage of those who still roam
‘cross the miles of beaches where sorrow has been
Solely, because Galveston Island is home
From Ike’s reign of terror, lessons will be learned
And, Galveston will become wiser, in part
The Island’s serenity shall soon be returned
For no storm could ever claim Galveston’s heart.

Galveston has its place in history and song. However, like San Francisco, New Orleans, and Miami, the clock is ticking on the time when it will be too costly to rebuild after.

In the meantime, I'll sail from her port, take the free ferry to Bolivar, and study Moody Gardens.

Such a beautiful tribute to the resiliency of Galveston and her people: breaks my heart to see my favorite area in the state, laid low: hopefully one day, they will rebuild, better than ever. Well done, Jill. In the midst of your troubles, you reach out to those with much more ...

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I've never been to Galveston, but my twin has, and she fell in love with it. May God bless y'all down in that area; know you're in my heart, thoughts, and prayers!

Wonderful write of hope renewed after devastating winds and the reality that Galveston will rise again, like the phoenix! Very well penned, Jill; brava!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Burleson, Karen Lynn. :D
