His Golden Shield

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

On Sunday, December 7, 2008, Houston Police Officer, Timothy Abernethy, was killed in the line of duty. I wrote this poem to honor his memory.

Poem Artwork

The sky has turned a solemn gray
Our heads have bowed to mourn
An officer has passed away
A new angel is born
He has traded his uniform
For brilliant wings of white
His duty went beyond the norm
His heart was filled with might.

He gave his best to all he served
Less would never suffice
In his command, peace was preserved
Now, he’s found paradise
He rests among the chosen few
Who heeded to God’s call
The servants who proudly wore blue
Yet, sadly, took a fall.

The autumn sky has led to rain
The raindrops fall like tears
Each echoing the grief and pain
Of Tim Abernethy’s peers
Left in his loss, a legacy
Of faith and hope to yield
A valiant servant of the Lord
Has seized his golden shield.

Jill this is a very nice tribute to a fallen soldier sworn to protect us against those that would us harm. I know he is patrolling the golden streets of heaven, and others should take a lesson from his generosity. Thank you for sharing this enlightening poem.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love and who love you, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

When a cop is killed in the line of duty we all lose one more soldier that putted is life between our peace and the criminals. Cops are as heroes as combatant soldiers falling on battle, we should honor them showing respect to every Police Officer.

Jill,

What a beautiful tribute. And how sad your friend had to die. But as you mention several times, he is in a better place. May he rest in peace.
