Poem Artwork

When one sees at a distance

His old country and home town,

He feels a joyous satisfaction.

Though it is full of ruins now

And overgrowth of trees and tall weeds,

And when he enters it he finds

But a tenth part remaining of the past,

Still he feels that satisfaction of yore.

How much more

When he sees what he saw,

And hears what he heard long ago. . .

All this is to him

Like a water tower sixty feet high

Exhibited in the open sight

In front of everyone

To be seen by none.

Yes, we know how things use to be and why that saying means what it means, "You can never go back home."

Always,

A fine insight. It's amazing that what is most visible is mostly lost within the realm of the invisible. Nice work. John

It certainly is true that when one returns to a place they once lived, often parts of the landscape that were taken for granted suddenly seem to have much more meaning.

Excellent choice of symbolism with the water tower. I especially like the philosophy of the last stanza. Good work.
