In pursuit of happiness,

people drop jobs and marriages

to seek their elusive prey.

They may as well hunt night geckos

(found in southern states)

by scouring the bushes

in vain.

To spot geckos,

those mottled alien-looking lizards

with translucent skin,

Simply turn a light on.

A porch light in spring or summer,

maybe a bathroom light. 

Open the window and check the screen.

Go about your routine.

Before you know it,

a gecko or two will

come to feast on the tiny

insects attracted by the light.

In a similar way,

happiness feeds on the qualities

you are really pursuing--

character, fidelity,

responsibility, charity.

Happiness is high on the food chain,

and will flit in to dine

on the sweet necter

of a loving life.
