Talking To My Plants

by Edie M. Batstone — Read all 134 poems by Edie M. Batstone

Mental Health Issues affect everyone, and it is so important to support all of the initiatives that are breaking down the harmful stigmas that are keeping people from recognising symptoms and seeking help. Laughter and humour can be powerful coping tools for all of us, as can the act of nurturing.

Talking To My Plants

I talk and talk and pour it out;
The philodendron's all worn out!
The poor hibiscus is in a state,
The aloe plant can hardly wait
For me to rest my vocal glands,
The prayer plant just threw up her hands!
-------------
She's talking to her plants again,
She offers them a drink,
They're very good at listening
When she's deep into a think;
They never interrupt her,
When her mind's on the attack;
They welcome her encouragement
And try to give some back;
They share a secret nature knows;
Life is a giving wheel,
To nurture beauty where one goes
Leads our hearts to heal,
One more circle,
One more time,
It's our turn at the wheel.

Thank goodness for our plants, or cats or whatever we may find comforting in our time of need!! Understand perfectly...

I really like your unique poem about the healing power of talking to plants. But if the plants could talk back, I think this is something like what they would say:

"Why are you always killing me with kindness? Too much water. Not enough sun. Total neglect. Clipping my leaves and branches--stunting me."

"You know I'm tropical. Why did you leave me out in the cold to freeze?"

Lovely poem Edie! When I lived in England our next door neighbor always talked to her plants. It's a common practice in Great Britain and if you check out their gardens other folks might think it's worth a chance!

What a beautiful tribute to plants. I talk to mine too, and they never talk back. I've never tried talking to a wall though Michael (LOL!)
My hothouse plants loves to be talked to, and they thrive. It is beneficial to both the plants and me. I wonder if talking harshly to the weeds would have an effect on their proliferation?

The irony is that there is scientific evidence now to support the fact that talking to plants does actually enhance their growth, compared to a those that are not talked to....
That aside,m it can be a therapeutic and soothing thing to do...
I talk and tend to my plants every day, and they are thriving!
Best wishes,
Diana...

As long as the plants don't talk back, feel free to yak. It's better than talking to the wall.
