I'm not trying to move a mountain,
nor make it come to me.
My goal is just to reach the top
and see what I can see.

For all my youth,
I lingered in the valley,
gazed up at those far peaks and dreamed
of fame and riches waiting for me;
I had only but to choose, it seemed.

Many times elders would ask me,
"What is it thou wouldst
choose to quest?"
And while I thought I knew the answer,
they'd just smile,
'cause they knew best.

"You'll never achieve
that which you seek--
you're just not the type at all,
tough enough to climb a mountain.
Try and you shall surely fall!"

But, were they right? I was uncertain.
Hadn't elders found the truth
which comes from wisdom
and climbing mountains?
Their many years had taught them! Sooth!

And then one night while I lay sleeping,
dreaming in the village fair,
the question once more posted to me
by a Voice which breathed no air...

The path I followed leading nowhere,
while all about me mountains great,
beckoned me above the village,
tempting me to challenge fate.

"Make a goal," the Greatness rumbled,
and in the sky I saw a light
assuring me the paths up mountains
while difficult, for me were right.

Each of us must find our own way,
each of us led by a heart
which longs to see
the views from mountains
which we should never fear but start

to climb not knowing
what we'll find there
or encounter on the way,
but you'll never see
the world before you
if you don't make a goal someday...

It's not too late.
