This story has been experienced by so many of us; does Mother know best? Only time can tell. The Steamy Windows reference made me smile fondly, don't think it gets any better.
Those were the days… Could you have been the one who was separated by your mother? It certainly does bring back the memories. Foggy windows, getting stuck, and running the battery down playing the radio. That's why I held off, even through college.
Ah the wisdom of this young lass :)

At least she was wise enough to think of her future
not taking the chance to stunt it prematurely...
I married that man and stayed with him for 32 years. Now happily divorced. If it wasn't for my beautiful children I would have wanted my mother to do what yours did. .
