The Spider in the Tub

I turn on the water,
adjusting the spray,
and turn to reach for the soap
on the far end of the tub.
behind the shower curtain.

In one corner of the tub,
a tiny spider struggles
to climb the slick surface
which offers no grip,
even to one so small.

I turn off the water
and reach through the curtain
for a tissue, which I place
in front of the spider
hoping it will climb on.

It does not, and there ensues
a game in which I coax
and it evades.
Eventually it gets on,
and I lift it to safety.

Why so much time
spent to save a spider?
Because it is alive,
and life is a precious gift
too soon reclaimed.

A spider's life
may mean little
to most people,
but it means a lot
to God, the spider, and me.

I am not a big fan of spiders, but I did write a poem about one, which I can't post here as I entered it in a contest. I don't bother spiders unless they bother me, but I don't like them much. The only ones I don't really mind are Daddy Long Legs, which are funny to watch.

I would have screamed out loud and then flush it down the drain. They multiply very quickly.

Scary write!

I'll remember this lesson next time I reach for my shoe. Maybe I'll send a copy of this to Woody Allen (Remember the spider bash with tennis racquets in ANNIE HALL?)

These Black and Blue Red Zone Days by Aberjhani

Just as life during the pandemic was color-coded with different hues representing different levels of danger, life in its aftermath has become shaded in similar ways. As a self-styled “Seeker of Beauty with Beauty,” (borrowing from a quote by W.E.B.
