I do not live in your world:
I do not fit in there.
And I've managed to convince myself
that I don't really care.

I ignore words like "lonely":
to me they don't exist.
(Words are very flexible:
if they don't fit, they'll twist.)

I've shared my world with others
oft' enough to see
there is no word in English
more beautiful than "we".

But loss can be more painful
than love-starved souls can bear.
So I've built walls around me,
against the world out there.

I've made my world a fortress,
protecting me from pain.
And though it is a prison,
I can't be hurt again.

But Hope has left one small gate
set in my walls of rock:
Should there be someone for me,
the key is in the lock.
