Doggie Speak

by Neenah Davis-Wilson — Read all 7 poems by Neenah Davis-Wilson

How my little Rat terrier cross lets me know she's in need.

Saturday, May 5, 2018

Little doggie has some needs
She's learned how
To articulate
So I can understand.
Yes, we've worked out a
Little ritual that seems
To do the trick.

She rushes to me urgently.
What? I ask. What you gotta do?
Tell me, Kai Cei! Tell me quick!
You gotta go out? You do?
Go tell Brett! Go tell him quick!
She rushes off to alert my son,
Who whisks her out the door.

Later, there she is again,
A paw upon my knee.
What? I ask. What do you want?
She dances by my chair.
Tell me! Tell me quick! Want food?
Yep, guess she does for
She's danced right to her bowl!

I go sit down, ready to write
But here she is AGAIN!
What? What have I forgotten?
Tell me! Tell me quick!
She pokes her nose at my leg
And trots on toward the sink.
Oh! Quickly, I go fill that bowl.

So, finally, she might be content!
