A description of love from the Cherokee point-of-view.
What is love?
Love is respect.
When we’re not laughing or kissing
or keeping warm in a buffalo robe,
we still value each other’s friendship.
Love is when
we miss each other
and want to be together
even when we’re separated by one hundred miles.
Love is when
I know all about you
and you know all about me,
but it doesn’t matter.
Even though the whole tribe
thinks we’re wrong,
I am loyal to you
and you are loyal to me.
Love is when
we can walk down a stony path together
in homemade moccasins
without feeling the stones.
When things aren’t going well,
I still love you, and you still love me.
You bring me your torn moccasins
and I mend them.
At the end of our journey
we will sleep together under the stars.
There is no greater honor
than being with you.
