The Door

by Myra Wexler Darwish — Read all 62 poems by Myra Wexler Darwish

The "Door" is a metaphor for the emotional turmoil that can enter a woman's life and disrupt her natural harmony when she learns of a difficult diagnosis of someone she cares deeply about. The "Door" speaks to the choices she makes that support her healing process, given difficult circumstances.

The Door

“Who’s there?” she said, hearing the knocking spree

“It’s anger, let me in so I can stir your passions.”

“Stay away from me,

My soul cannot breath with you here.”

The knocking continued…

“Will you open me so sadness can sit beside you?”

“My heart’s contemplation is heavy enough,

My tears seen by only a few,

My solace comes with the moonbeams.”

The knocking continued…

Fear took its turn, and the knocking became stronger.

My heart pounded in rhythm to its noisy beat.

“I will not listen to you any longer,

Harmony cannot exist with you near.”

The knocking continued…

“Who is it this time?”

“I’m the one that should have knocked in the first place.”

I smiled sublimely,

Love finally found its way to my door,

The knocking stopped…

Interesting view of how emotions can overcome us and how we can face them.

Eh . . . If only it could be that easy, and I understand it is, in fact, that easy for some. Others however . . .
