Dream of Angels
by Debra Kraft
c 2010

I had a dream of angels.
They came to soothe my fears.
Yet all their ministrations did
was help to dry my tears.

I have no fear of dying.
I have no fear of death.
The single thing I fear the most –
what truly steals my breath –

is the thought of leaving things undone,
wrongs I need to right,
words I’ve said – or should have said,
abandoned out of spite,

debts unpaid and funds withdrawn,
ill spent and ill deserved.
So much to do that now I seem
too quiet, too reserved,

as I try to dream of angels
who come with seeds of hope,
their sleeves rolled up, prepared to work…
Perhaps then I can cope.
