DIVINELY INSPIRED

A Father's cupped hands
with those of a little child
cradled within

The child's open palms
nurture a teaspoon of sand
from which emerges
the head
of a desert rose

This is a picture
of prayer
And of poetry:

Ours is the privilege
of causing
the barren places
to bloom -
but the inspiration
is that of
the heart and mind
of an attentive Father

whose compassion is boundless
whose life is a gift

* * * *

Like the grace
displayed by St Kevin
who patiently
nurtured his chicks
pre-flight,

God's Spirit is
the brooding dove
that lovingly causes
the eggs to hatch;

Our hearts merely
the hands
that hold them
