Hers was a life laid down
to care for the needs of men
in a decrepit hospital ward.
She knew the scent of sleepless nights,
the onslaught of the relentless days
and she blotted out their pain.
Sweat-soaked skin
that no amount of soap
could freshen;
the ammonia of fever
and the subtle musk of death:
all were familiar to her -
even the taint of fruitless semen...
But suddenly, there was
an unfamiliar fragrance:
a body that was different,
outside of her jurisdiction,
not under her most tender care...
He said she nursed him
back to life,
that he lived to take care of her
always.
When he said his name was Jesus,
she was suddenly in a garden;
Love was calling her name:
"Mary".
Such a revealing of truth verse by verse here, Kate!! Jesus saw Mary's heart, not the externals. He was criticized for fraternizing with undesirables. It is life's irony that those brought down are usually the ones closest to God. This unfolding makes Jesus known as human, as He was or He couldn't have fulfilled His destiny as a human sacrifice. I hope not to offend, but Jesus was not the effeminate image that is portrayed in general. He was a carpenter, muscled and swarthy. His contenance would not have been looked on as fair, by any means of the word...
This is an amazing tribute to a woman. With the doubts the Di Vinci Code put into history you seem to give us a more human touch to rely upon. Thank you a million times for words so beautiful and compassionate that love means more to me.
oh yes!
The spirit of Jesus was in all the patients
As in All mankind!

I wish you could see my face......I just lit up when I got to the ending!!!
wonderful
At first my thoughts were darkly comic and secular
I was thinking.......The World According To Garp
Ever see that movie
About a nurse who is not.........an opportunist.....in a way.
If you have not seen the movie, write me and I will tell you about it....to write that here seems like a blasphamy......
aye aye
ok I hope my ramble did not detract from my sincere delight of this write Kate
Vivid olfactory imagery brings the hospital smells of sickness and decay powerfully into mind; and to come into the Presence of the High Physician Himself--most inspiring and faith building!
Stunning! Very powerful write. Thank you for sharing this tremendous uplifting treasure.

unique and powerfully rendered ... excellent metaphor that blends into the season ...
"Only his hands could make her well"
The ending kinda broke my legs off... totally unexpected... gorgeous in its impact. Sublime altogether.
Beautiful Kate.
