Can't xactly pretend this is poetry, but perhaps it is poetic... not too sure where it came from, either, but at least it makes a change! :)) xx

THE MOUNTAIN

Life went on and on in the valley, every day different but the same; the moments of each and every lifetime consumed with attention to detail and the transitory nature of Big Issues.

And the mountain stood imperious at the head, always commanding attention; always defying conquest. Timeless and unchanging, his unspoken word was like a law that went defiantly unheeded. One day I would stop, dare to climb him; seek to challenge his brooding authority that seemed to so belittle the reaches of my own life. One day I would conquer.

It was already mid-morning, the day I capitulated. His challenge no longer resistible, I left the dead to bury the dead, turned a deaf ear to the rumours surrounding my husband’s love life, ditched the shopping whilst choosing between soap powders. Fuelled by relentless frustration, I stopped for nothing and headed for the steepest, roughest ascent.

By the time I was diminished beside the mountain’s heavy flank and shadow, my hardness had softened. The moment my foot struck the first jarring note on the stony path upwards, warm tears permeated the hard rock of my soul. I felt heat in my breath and suddenly alive. The route, though rugged, meandered at times through bowls of lush grass and unknown flora. I heard slight scree-fall, disturbed by hinds on the ledges above. Occasional cloud cover served to comfort and to intensify the clarity of the immediate way ahead; and, when the fog dispersed, the views and perspectives that emerged at every twist and turn were like distant galaxies of alternative existence. Even at the top, when there was no way up but a climb instead over craggy, disconnected boulders, a sense of protection prevailed, provided by lower rings of nest-encrusted tree-life.

The summit was not an insurmountable pinnacle, gloriously unattainable, but, instead, a small plateau where it was easy to rest, breathe and learn of the mountain’s benevolence and wisdom. I made my descent by a wide and pleasant route, blessed by this mountain’s friendship; I was a “valley person” no longer: the mountain was now inside me.

We had both conquered and had both won. Our admiration and respect was mutual and complete.

When we embrace the mountain within, we can conquer anything. Your inner strength shines through in everything you do. This is poetry at its finest, Kate... superbly written.

Kate, you put people like me to shame when you call such a brilliant work "pretending to be poetic". A poem is not necessarily has to have verses, there are numerous prose poems written. You have done a brilliant job. It has that special transcendental style, with some brilliant oblique images, which evokes great feeling in this reader. "The mountain" is supposedly the central metaphor, which has been expanded with excellent extended images and allusions. I liked how you describe a struggle, and take this poem above its two dimensional confinement. A complex job, very well done.

Quite some allegorical pilgrimage you took us on here Klimbing Kate...
The view from the top is vastly different to the quagmire a the foot.. And whilst at the top chuck all doubt and fears off the mountain leaving the spirit free to soar..
Briliant images this conjures.

And at the end of the trek, there was harmony between you and the mountain. Insight reminds us that there is harmony in all things and even if we try to deny it or defy it, we will succumb to it. We swim with the dolphins, creatures of another world, yet mammals and earth dwellers like ourselves with a common respect for our differences. We rest beneath the trees, feeding them with our exhaled breath and taking in their oxygen. There is perfection in the total of creation and harmony and interdependency flows within it all. This is an excellent write, Kate, with so many layers to peel away and when imbedded in the next layer, savor it to the fullest then delve yet another layer deeper; like a luscious pomegranate, a seemingly endless delight of soul quenching sweetness. This is indeed poetic, and full of wonderful images that took me to the top of the mountain and into the harmonious realm of creation.
Take care,
Sherry

This reminds of a story written by a child called "Forever Mountain", a sumo wrestler who was overthrown by three tiny women with the inner strength of a mountain.

We all conquer whatever we have to, in the right place and time (what your poem is saying from my own perspective.)
Thanks for sharing the possibility of inner strength Sis. Kate,
blessin's

A beautiful parable and meditation on the possibilities of expanded consciousness when one dares to open oneself to such possibilities. Love the individual creative take on the classic spiritual image of the mountain.

This is indeed an inspired write and an intelligen use of metaphor. We only fear, or feel threatened by the unknown. Climbing the mountain symbolizes your quest of knowledge which once conquered becomes one with our experience and no longer a threat. Your next to last line expresses that very nicely: "I was a “valley person” no longer: the mountain was now inside me."

I really admire your talent and intelligence.

You seem to be one of those rare few who exist poetically. You may not even be aware of it, but you ARE poetry. Your eloquence and ability to disect the writings of others is phenominal. Wonderful piece, Kate.
