I walked briskly the length of the university campus to catch the last post. Across quads of concrete, my image was mirrored in verticals of grubby sheet glass and unyielding uprights of steel as I bent against an easterly wind.
The students all home, emptiness rang out - and hardness: academic pressure, cancer, radiotherapy, ulcerative colitis and degenerative disease – culminating in death. The heavy load of recent months.
But instead of straight lines all I could see was fluidity. My reflection a willow counterbalanced against force; my gait, like my breathing, strong and pumping. My outline softer, more compliant – with my lengthening hair and weight-loss. Hard edges eroding.
Over the concourse, the postman noticed my smile and purposeful approach. He walked to meet me halfway, his hand outstretched as if with benevolence. We exchanged inconsequential words, communication that was easy and flowing, as my letter changed hands.
Turning back, I watched a child on her bike wheeling in elaborate, exaggerated circles, enjoying unhindered paved space and leaning into the dynamics of her life, bubbles of laughter catching on the wind and bouncing off tall buildings.
Life on wheels - the picture fixed in my mind today: frail humanity borne forwards into new spheres of existence. Changing, moving out, growing up and shifting into new cycles.
I hung a left and walked in the lee of the wind through expansive landscaped grounds. Fresh green grass rippled mildly, applauding the exuberant showiness of fountains who threw back their heads with ringing laughter in response. A workman’s radio billowed rasping strains of Sting’s: “Every little thing she does is magic…”
Ah, yes: The Magic! The energy that sets the wheels in motion, transforming harsh places of steel and stone into mystical centres of journey and growth.
Outstanding proseful piece Kate, the imagery conjoured here is pure magic, although the campus sounds a bit grim lol...I went to a rather beautiful college, lots of green and views etc...(never got much work done, too busy looking out of windows during lectures lol). This is pure excellence Kate, go to the top of the class.
The one thing about living that God gited to us is our ability to dream. This gives us hope and a vacation on the frugal side. I love the steps you took today and your abilty to word it so we all rode upon your shoulder.
thanks for a beautiful picture.

Kate - You take us on yout magic carpet through the form and structure of an ordinary institution of learning, with your words turning it into a wonderland of beauty and purpose... and a touch of young ones to take it to the next level. You share a pen of magical movement to a score of unwsritten music within our heads. Marvelous! And, thank you . - Bill
Whatever you write is pure magic to me. Excellent imagery, very well penned! BRAVA!

Yes remember the song and I think he must have had my sweet Kate in his mind when he wrote that song. I can see you in my minds eye taking your walk as your poet's eye transforms sight into words of beauty and hope. I am glad you are back and in good form dear one.
The deep-dive literary meditations presented as stories, poems, and essays in The American Poet Who Went Home Again, A Mosaic of My Soul at Work, have captivated and inspired readers ever since its first paperback publication in 2008.
In a post-coup America, an Illinois farm boy is drawn into the resistance by his brother's death. Captured, he is given a choice: betray his friends, or the girl he loves will be lobotomized.
Enjoyed the Vidid imagery you painted!!
Love Tinka
And may your new cycles be glorious ones for you, Kate.
