The Lived Experience of Memory Impaired

by Miller H Caldwell — Read all 115 poems by Miller H Caldwell

I have been asked to address students at the Bell Health College on the subject of The Lived Experience of the Memory Impaired! Well the line set me off on my introduction to them by poem.

Monday, August 21, 2006

"The lived Experience of the Memory Impaired"

"The lived Experience of the Memory Impaired"

A daunting subject when others compared.

I could talk for hours about Dundee United

Or what I am doing for those not clear sighted.

I could tell of my time in troubled Kashmir

I think I recall, I did so once here.

I played my guitar then, the one with twelve strings

Sadly its neck broke – guitarists know of these things

So I have another, it’s quite easy to play

Its made in Japan, its come a long way!

2006, has been quite a strange year

Of meetings and encounters and one I did fear

You see I met Prince Philip and Usama Bin Larden

Er…Philip’s was at Holyrood, out in his garden.

Weddings this year were equally strange

On the hills above Loch Earnhead, I was bitten alive

And a Ghanaian wedding in Brentford, almost started at five

Plans for this Autumn are now being made

A novel I’ve started, and Royalties paid

So things look quite rosy, I think you’ll agree

But I know just what’s my capability

I still find I’ve shopped for the bread and milk twice

And what will I do with my stores of brown rice?

A list you’d think would help I suppose

But passing a bin, well, that’s where the list goes !

I’m tidy, at times, at other times not

I attend to the mail, I sign on the dot

I forget to put, the clothes on the line

In this recent hot weather, Joce didn’t mind

It’s names not faces that bothers me most

And my ability to set fire, to pieces of toast

So writing’s the thing for me nowadays

I know it is lonely and it hardly pays

But imagination is wonderful, it takes me away

To places and times for an hour or a day

Ideas and phrases, I like to nurture

In poems of the past and poems of the future

So let’s get on with the day and you’ll see

A Lived Experience of my Memory

Impaired as it is, but not….always… to me
.
