A poem about growing up in the country and moving to the city. Seeking acceptance, and a full, wonderful life.

Poem Artwork

Big City (Concrete Cowgirl)

Isometric shapes and twinkling beauty

That seem to reach to the starlit velvet sky

I step outside to a world that is surreal

A thrill to my being

It makes me high

I live in the heart of my city

A world so different from where I came from

Dual planes of existence

Living in two worlds

Under the same hot Texas sun

At my home, skyscrapers sprout before the horizon

Stunning craftsmanship bustling with life

I stare in awe with my head tilted back, looking UP

Mesmerizing. So close. Almost unreal.

Like I played the lottery and found out that I won

Don’t know why I spent so long

On a leather saddle suffering cows

Kicking up dirt in a well lit arena

Deafening cheers from encouraging crowds

Tough competition and lonesome songs

Rough ropes, hard work and dust on my breath

The reward at the end

To define life and death

Seclusion can slowly make people insane

All of that time alone can make them overly vain

Entertainment of certain fantasies that the mind can create

Illusions will follow

With no one around to give them debate

Joining the living is a sobering test

When alone one decides she is simply the best

Brushing off my boots

I joined the land of the living

Gave up isolation to be HONEST and giving

Joined with a society just like myself

Acceptance and love are the ultimate wealth

Life blessed me with love for both of these places

And when times get tough and things close in a bit

I’ve got country, wild and deserted with wide open spaces

I don’t have to be a hypocrite

I have a community that approves what my whole soul embraces

LIFE IS GOOD!
