This is a list of SOME medications available for slowing down and treating Alzheimers. (A repost)

The internet offers a multitiude
of information about many medical conditions.

Some medications for Alzheimers prevent the break down of acetycholine( a chemical messenger important for learing and memory) in the brain. They are called cholinestrase inhibitors and are used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimers. They delay the symptoms and help to keep acetlycoline levels high in the brain to support
communication and memory.

Arciept (donepezil)
Exelon (rivastigmine)
Galantamine (razadyne)

There is a new patch of Exelon
that was approved by FDA. It offers time realease of the medication over 24hr period .
Its now availabe and can be used daily instead of the capsule form.

NAMENDA ( Memantine )
Works by regulating the activity
of glutamate, a different messenger for learning and memory in the brain.

Its currently the Only drug
of its kind used for treatment
of moderate to severe Alzh. It temporairly delays worsening symptoms
and is similar to cholinestrase inhibitors. Namenda can be taken with any of the above medications. It comes in a starter pack for a month and then is taken 10 mg twice a day. It really makes a big difference in ones cognative ability!!!!!
All have side affects of different kinds.Some people rarely expierence any , others are bothered. It all depends on the individual.

Antidepressants are usually given
for mood swings and irritability.
Celexa, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil,or
Desyryl may be used.

Anxiolytics for anxiety include
Ativan, or Serax ect.

Antipsychotics can be used for hallucinations, delusions, hostility
and agression.
Abilify, Clozoril, Haldol, Seroquel
are a few.

There are a lot of vitamins which can help too . I will write about them later on.

I think there are probally more medications out there but these I have mentioned seem offer the most hope at this time. There is no cure for this deadly disease. The more I find out about it, the more complex it seems. I often wonder if they will ever find a cure for it .

Unfortunately the U.S. does not have the generic forms of Alzheimers medications available for its citizens. They can be gotten in Europe or Canada , but not here....
I WONDER WHY!

There is a cap on medicare of $2700.for payment on medications for the year. Once this is reached, a person has to pay total cost out of pocket unless they are low income or can qualify for drug assistance. Our cost is almost $400 a month each, for Exelon and Namenda. Needless to say we will reach our medicare cap soon.. I'm not sure what we'll do then...Its hard to live in todays world..
