My brother in law, James is the oldest of 10 and my husbands brother. James has Alzheimers and is dying from cancer. His wife, Irene died on March 6. I wrote "Beyond life Golden Sunset" for her. I am writing this poem as I see James in daily life.... It's heartbreaking !
He sits alone,as days come and go. It seems like an eternity since he saw her, tho its only been a week.
His pale weathered face stares vacantly into some other place and time.
He doesn't answer when spoken too very often.
Tears fall from faded blue eyes, as he softly whispers, " Irene". Her name echos through the chasms of his feeble mind
Oh how he misses his wife and companion of 56 years.....sometimes

Although the story is not a happy one; the story you wrote is lovely! What sadness in this piece; after sharing a life with someone for so long...then to be left alone to face his own agony.. Indeed...to be married so many years is truly a Blessing..I too just went to a funeral..Warren had to bury his wife and they were married for 52...but the service was most uplifting...as family and memories live on!
MaryGrace, this is heart-wrenching. Don't you just want to reach out and touch him and take his pain away? Your poem brings his pain alive to the reader--it did to me. God bless him--and you and your family.
