I worry every time that I make this drive.
Afraid he’ll be gone or barely alive.
He’s 96 years old and a friend of mine.
There he is though, smart suit and groomed hair.
As I got a little closer he gave a toothless grin.
I noticed his hands trembled more,
than the last time that I saw him.
He’d been in this nursing home,
for more than twenty years.
His wife Amy, died at home. The
one the state took, for back taxes owed.
He regaled me of their life together.
They were married in ‘25.
He worked for the railroad, Amy was a homemaker.
She had a small garden of tomatoes onions and red peppers.
She sold hot sauce at the local market.
After church on sundays they’d
go for a picnic.
Home-made rolls, potato salad
and fried chicken.
Today it’s just a memory within
his heart. His rheumy eyes tell me
how he loved her when he speaks of his Amy.
I know that soon, he’ll be with her
and I’ll be left behind.
Encased in my memories
and his, this wise old man.
Vividly imaged character sketch in verse - well done, Janet.

I have always found it very troubling whenever a state takes possession of someone’s property for back taxes. That’s a whole different matter and one I have battled different states over. Anyways, JC, on the merits of the write, this is another shinning example of how easily one can be drawn towards your timeless creations. I wish you continued success, and look forward to drifting this way many more times in the future. Outstanding, well-written, heartfelt story/poem, Poet.

You are a wise woman to enjoy the stories this elderly is sharing with you. Beautiful write!
The taking of the home got to me. I am furious with both of our governments lack of resepct for our elderly and lack of acknowledgement of all of what they have given us through out their lives, just to take it away from them when they are too old to fight for it. Burns me up!

For some, life is filled with excitement and beautiful surprises, each day bringing great expectation. For others, it is merely waiting...
Janet, I felt the tears welling, as I read this. For to me there is nothing as beautiful as the stories one can tell of a love gone first.
I adore talking to the aged, for they are not only wise but they've seen so much, and they are willing to share it when they find somebody that will listen.
I just loved this. Thanks Janet. Lisa
This is so splendid, and too me somewhat sad. Fantastic write of the memories of this dear man. Thanks for sharing this with us all.
