The Southern Belle's Colonel (she wishes him to be a General) gives signal of life, although, his mind are still trying to cope with the pain for his wounded soldiers.
But love still there, if only, to calm his feas a letter could come through...

Poem Artwork

Six months after Gettysburg my darling
still looking after my soldier fellowman
which we took on those fields of death
after looking for survivors, one by one,
brave with red rosette on gray uniforms
too weak to walk or on the horses ride,
so to Charlottesville we tool all of them,
to Savannah I couldn’t well be going back.

Then the early winter came with heavy snow
that made, from those fields tent hospitals,
a painful journey on the mule trains
for the wounded we took in long caravans,
and which we protected from many bandits
with the swords and the help of the hangman
as this country of ours in thrown into chaos
and we are forced to be the only Lawman.

Months have passes since your last letter,
I fear what could have happened there back,
because we hear of atrocities many rumors
taken here by going north a passing newsman,
the wounded heard them and are worrying
for their kin, if there will be waiting a house,
and I worry too, my little Red Southern Belle,
if my return can be too late and kill my heart.

I want just to say in a very few words my dear,
when words of love is not enough, there’s no calm,
the emptiness descending will make the void,
where the soul fall in despair, more vacant,
your absence impairing the tender memory
of your warm trembling body between my arms,
yes my darling, when words of love is not enough,
returning to you is the only way for my heart.

With all my love
your Colonel (or General as you wish)

PS. I heard that from the South and Union escorted,
with many letters are coming a most expected mailman,

This is a thing of beauty, the poem and the romance shared between the historical characters. I do hope the General makes it home soon and that the veranda won't collapse in the storm he brings with him.

One foot in front of the other...long journeys ahead, and many battles to fight...Are words EVER just enough, George?

...and every war leaves a man longing for her touch...especially when the enemy, he knows, has rattled any bit of tenderness or compassion he might of had left...the empathy he once had, hangs on a string, barely leaving any for himself...yes, the touch of delicacy and that taste of her love can possibly bring him back!
Loved this George~

This completes and enriches the series. "When Love words is not enough"
is all that poetic excellence means, and most of all it is how the seed of creative magnificence becomes a tree of wonders.

Thank You for showing this and many generations to come how Poetry glows.

In gratitude and admiration,

I think you and LaBelle should put these love letters into a book. they give [we] readers a look into the reality of this war which cannot be learned by reading history books.

God bless you. Kathy

This series is excellent. You put us right in the action. These could easily be made into a screenplay.

A saga in history comes to life in this drama of love and war that you unfold before our eyes. Sharp though sad images of a time in history where men stood or fell on their convictions.
