In the battlefiel the Colonel cared for the young soldiers wellbeing, fearing writing "that" letter to his family...
Alone, on a strange beach, he walks remembering the words in a letter that someone feared writing to him...
Thousands of miles between their soul they have
getting by the seconds more together than apart,
not like two unknown to each other ghost ships
passing without knowing in the middle of the night,
the Colonel got a very short letter saying very little,
telling him of his Southern Belle’s ailing heart,
and of her will walk into that sea with such despair
that will left, to be forever, her footprints in the sand,
at the site of a most unwanted absence of a lonely
magnolia that said her tears are morning dew nor cry.
Walking by another beach just out of waves reach
the Colonel remembers as the smoke of his cigar like
the one of ancient tribes told to each other’s thoughts
called for help, or saying what was in their hearts,
those gossamer gray threads were taken by the wind
and same that those impossible dreams don’t crystallize,
because they were doomed by a cruel capricious faith
that reunited them on a labyrinth by the wrong sides,
where there are no solutions or escape doors to open
and let the ghost ships sail together until the end of time.
Waves telling him with the same sound of other waves
lonely magnolias don’t have only morning dew but do cry,
like he couldn’t explain that those drops on his face
were late evening dew of seas filled and madening sad,
that it will never occur or even give permission to those
most stern eyes of his, to hear his aching heart and apply;
if the most precious soul was ill what he was doing here?
talking to an empty beach that would never understand
which yes, there are every morning drops of cold dew,
but also that his lonely magnolia eyes, sadness tears had.

You captured the distance - sadness - emptiness of helpless longing for something lost and gone away. And you make the reader want to reach in there an "fix" it. This is the stuff of magick.
With the sweet fragrance of Magnolias all around how can anyone deny or forget the Colonel. Sweet, loving thoughts and emotions of days long gone, yet brought to the present through your reminiscent words....
What a beautiful heart you have Dear Colonel, they say that all our tears gravitate to the sea where at last they are blended together forever. Such a tender and heart touching poem.
Ahhh Georg, another in the spellbinding series that weaves the heart and soul of the old soldier with the sweet heart of the South...but this one also offers a glimpse at the deep sadness of war.

Truly sad and heartfelt, and truly a thought many a soldier has had, in many a war, down through the ages.
