spelunking
great word
decided one day
to check out the cave
we got a good one
close by
took the kids
no guide but there were
other spelunkers
we thought we’d be fine
big cavern at first very cool
stairs chiseled in stone
we wound our way through
light here and there
we did remember flashlights
saw some bats
uhhed and ahhed
deep in the bowels a stream appeared
we had to splash through
and then
the trail got a little twisted
a little confusing
and all there was to follow
where arrows painted
some faded hardly there
places where you had to crawl
stalactites appearing where your
head belonged
stalagmites appearing where your
feet should be
the smell of deep earth
the damp of below the ground
feeling walls that would never see sun
slimy
kinda made you think
bout wishing you were up top
kinda made you think
what the hell am I doing down here
I mean
We Could Have An Earthquake or something
or
We Could Get Lost Down here or something
and right before I reached
for the Xanax
we saw the light
and we didn’t need
a faded arrow
anymore
gave up spelunking
after that
let the spelunkers spelunk
I’ll just stay topside
kinda used to the sun
green trees and fresh air
no cave dweller blood in me
I’m an above the earth
kinda girl
spelunking
great word
stupid hobby

LOL i agree, josie..great word, "spelunking", but something i am NOT interested in doing, thank you very much! i am claustrophobic as it is (but NOT NEARLY as bad as karla is; still, it's kinda' bad!), and i prefer to stay ABOVE or ON the ground, NOT underneath! {{{SHIVERS))) good write, sweetie! love, your (claustrophobic) friend in texas, karen lynn. ((((HUGS)))) :o
