A Poet’s Prayer



Lord, before you tuck me in for the night,
Grant my fingers another verse to write;
While I sleep, pour wisdom into my mind,
And let my waking words heal humankind.

Gift me once again to see through your eyes…
To drink deeply the beauty of your skies,
To follow the rainbow’s eternal beams,
And paint words from the canvas of my dreams.

When conflict strikes the world, I’ll bear the strife
With thoughts that calm the chaos of this life;
When sorrow fills my loved ones, I will cry
With words as tears like raindrops from the sky.

Give me the sweet laughter of silly rhymes
To give every soul some light-hearted times;
Give me also the soft pillow of prose
To lull the world into Sleepyland’s throes.

Lord, before you grant me eternal rest,
Let me bless the world as I have been blessed:
With the words to express the peace and love
That comes from you, in Heaven high above.
