Why do Good Deeds?

Is our road to Heaven paved by the good deeds we do?

Is eternal life a reward from God for accomplishments here on Earth?

Have I earned my place in Heaven for helping you?

Or have some special place reserved with special worth

Because I have paid my ties and given money to the poor?

Have I somehow earned God’s love with these deeds?

These are all questions we need to ask, for sure.

The answers are surprising; we do give to those in need

But not to earn a special place in God’s Kingdom.

This we must accept as a gift freely given.

Only then can our deeds bring spiritual freedom

Or the right to sit with our Maker in heaven.

Because we love him we will help our friends

Because he loves us he will lead us along

To follow the path that never ends

Until we find ourselves in the Kingdom of God

Not because we earned it for this we cannot do.

The deeds do not come from us or earn as much as a nod

From our Heavenly Father for these are his tasks which we pursue.

First comes Salvation and then the works really mean

That we have met God and our soul has truly seen

The need to follow where ever he leads

Salvation is born but comes in this order, you see.

First, he is the one who plants the seeds

This brings about the works that lead to eternity.
